German Footballer Arrested After Team-Mate Dies in Suspected Poisoning Case

A 35-year-old German amateur footballer has been arrested over the suspected poisoning death of his team-mate, with prosecutors investigating whether the killing was motivated by revenge.

A shocking case has emerged from German amateur football after a player was taken into custody more than a year after his team-mate died following an end-of-season trip.

The 35-year-old suspect, identified in reports as Marius W., is accused of secretly administering poison to his 30-year-old team-mate Philipp L. during a trip to Dresden with their club, TuS Rockenberg.

Philipp became seriously ill after returning from the trip and later died in hospital on June 16, 2025.

An investigation eventually determined that his death was caused by septic multi-organ failure resulting from poisoning, prompting authorities to revisit the circumstances surrounding his sudden illness.

Investigation Leads to Team-Mate

The case remained unresolved for more than a year before investigators arrested Marius on September 1, 2026.

According to German authorities, the suspect is now in pre-trial detention while investigators continue examining the evidence.

Searches of his home and workplace reportedly produced material that authorities are now evaluating as part of the investigation. Prosecutors have deliberately withheld details about the substance allegedly used and the precise circumstances of the suspected poisoning for investigative reasons.

The suspect has not publicly commented on the allegations.

As with any ongoing criminal investigation, the allegations against him remain unproven unless established in court.

Prosecutors Investigate Possible Revenge Motive

At the time, those close to him reportedly believed he could have suffered food poisoning after the team had eaten fish during the trip.

The subsequent medical investigation, however, identified poisoning as the cause of the fatal illness, changing the direction of the case entirely.

Club Left Stunned by Arrest

The developments have shocked TuS Rockenberg and those who knew Philipp.

The club previously described the deceased player as a valued member of the team, remembering him as a friend and fighter on the pitch.

The latest arrest has therefore added another painful dimension to a death that had already left the local football community grieving.

Club football chief Manuel Barufe reportedly said the developments had left everyone surprised and shocked, while expressing hope that investigators would establish exactly what happened.

Suspect Was Preparing for His Wedding

The arrest has also drawn attention because of its timing.

Marius was reportedly just weeks away from a planned wedding celebration when he was taken into custody.

Reports indicate that a civil ceremony had already taken place, with a larger celebration expected later in September.

Instead, the 35-year-old is now being held in custody as investigators examine his alleged connection to Philipp's death.

The case is still developing, and prosecutors have not publicly revealed all of the evidence gathered against the suspect.

For now, the central allegation is that Marius secretly poisoned his team-mate during the 2025 team trip and that the act may have been motivated by revenge.
