Chelsea have been eliminated from the Carabao Cup after Liverpool won a tense penalty shootout at Anfield following a 1–1 draw in the fourth round on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. Liverpool held their nerve to secure a 6–5 victory on penalties and book their place in the quarter-finals.

Rogers and Gakpo Strike in Quick Succession

The match came alive late in the first half, with both teams scoring from the penalty spot within three minutes.

Chelsea took the lead in the 40th minute when Morgan Rogers converted his penalty after Ryan Gravenberch’s challenge on Moisés Caicedo inside the box.

Liverpool responded almost immediately. Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana handled the ball in the penalty area, allowing Cody Gakpo to equalise from the spot in the 43rd minute.

The two goals set up a tense contest, but neither side could find a winner before the final whistle. With no extra time in this round, the tie went straight to penalties.

The shootout delivered the decisive drama as both sides converted several attempts before crucial misses changed the outcome.

Liverpool scored through Alexis Mac Allister, Alexander Isak, Gakpo, Florian Wirtz, Bradley Barcola and Joe Gomez. Kostas Tsimikas and Ryan Gravenberch missed their attempts.

Chelsea found the net through Pedro Neto, Rogers, Romeo Lavia, Jordan Henderson and Levi Colwill. However, Valentine Barco and Emanuel Emegha failed to convert, leaving the Blues under pressure.

The decisive moment came when Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili stopped Emegha’s attempt. Gomez then converted for Liverpool, before Wesley Fofana missed Chelsea’s next penalty to confirm the Reds’ 6–5 shootout victory.

Chelsea’s Cup Run Ends at Anfield

Chelsea will be disappointed to exit the competition after recovering from Liverpool’s late first-half equaliser and remaining level throughout the second half.

The penalty defeat also means the Blues must turn their attention to their remaining competitions, while Liverpool can look forward to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

For Liverpool, the victory was a test of composure as much as quality. Two missed penalties could have proved costly, but Mamardashvili’s save and Gomez’s conversion helped the hosts survive.

Liverpool Move On as Chelsea Regroup

Liverpool’s win keeps their Carabao Cup campaign alive and gives the team another opportunity to compete for silverware this season.

Chelsea, meanwhile, will have to reflect on the missed chances in the shootout. After a closely contested 90 minutes, the difference between progression and elimination came down to a handful of kicks.

At Anfield, Liverpool celebrated a place in the last eight, while Chelsea’s Carabao Cup journey ended in the cruellest fashion.
