The Champions League could return to Stamford Bridge this season — but in a remarkable twist, Chelsea will not be the team playing there.
Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk are in advanced talks to use Stamford Bridge as their temporary home for Champions League matches during the 2026/27 campaign, meaning the famous west London stadium could once again hear the competition's anthem despite Chelsea missing out on European football.
Shakhtar are searching for a suitable venue for their European home fixtures because they remain unable to stage Champions League matches at their own Donbas Arena.
The Ukrainian club have used stadiums across Europe for their home games in recent seasons, but London has now emerged as a preferred option.
Reports indicate negotiations with Chelsea over Stamford Bridge are already advanced, although the arrangement has not yet been formally confirmed.
The situation would create a strange sight for Chelsea supporters.
The Blues will not compete in the Champions League this season after finishing 10th in the Premier League in 2025/26.
Yet their own stadium could still stage some of Europe's biggest club matches.
It means Stamford Bridge could be filled with Champions League supporters and hear the competition's famous anthem while Chelsea's first team are absent from the tournament.
There is also a strong Ukrainian connection behind Shakhtar's interest in London.
The club have identified a sizeable Ukrainian community in the capital, with reports suggesting roughly 32,000 Ukrainian-born residents live in London.
Playing at Stamford Bridge could therefore give Shakhtar a temporary home that is not only suitable for Champions League football but also accessible to a significant part of their supporter community.
For Chelsea, this would be another reminder of how dramatically their fortunes have changed.
Stamford Bridge hosted Champions League football as recently as March, when Chelsea faced Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16. UEFA's official match report records PSG winning the tie 8–2 on aggregate.
Now, only months later, the stadium could once again host Europe's elite competition — without the Blues involved.
Chelsea's priority under Xabi Alonso will instead be rebuilding domestically after last season's disappointing campaign.
Nothing has been officially finalised yet, so Stamford Bridge should not be described as a confirmed Champions League venue for Shakhtar at this stage.
But with negotiations reportedly advanced, the possibility is becoming increasingly real.
For Chelsea fans, it would be an unusual experience: watching Champions League nights unfold at their own stadium while their team fights to earn its way back into Europe's elite competition.
