🚨 Former Portugal & West Ham Star Hugo Porfírio Spotted Driving Uber in Lisbon After Football Career

Former Portugal international Hugo Porfírio has been spotted working as an Uber driver in Lisbon, decades after representing his country at Euro 1996 and playing for clubs including West Ham, Sporting CP and Benfica.

The 53-year-old was reportedly recognised by two passengers during a short Uber journey between Olivais and Chelas, turning an ordinary ride into an unexpected meeting with a former international footballer.

From Euro 1996 to an Unexpected Uber Ride

Hugo Porfírio once shared dressing rooms with some of Portugal's biggest football names.

Now, more than two decades after his playing career ended, the former winger has found himself behind the wheel of an Uber in Lisbon.

According to Portuguese reports, Porfírio was recognised by passengers who had booked a journey between Olivais and Chelas.

The passengers initially had no idea who their driver was. During the journey, however, they discovered that he had once played professional football for Sporting CP, West Ham and Nottingham Forest.

A quick search revealed that their Uber driver was actually the former Portugal international who had featured at Euro 1996.

A Career That Included West Ham and Portugal

Porfírio came through Sporting's academy and was given his senior debut under the legendary Sir Bobby Robson.

His career later took him to União de Leiria, West Ham, Racing Santander, Benfica, Nottingham Forest, Marítimo and Al-Nassr.

During the 1996/97 season, he played 27 matches for West Ham, scoring four goals and providing three assists according to Portuguese football database ZeroZero.

His international career was brief but memorable.

Porfírio earned three senior Portugal caps and was part of the squad at Euro 1996, where he shared the Portugal dressing room with players including Luís Figo, Rui Costa and Vítor Baía.

The Passengers Had No Idea Who Was Driving

The story became even more amusing because the passengers reportedly initially treated the journey as nothing more than a normal Uber trip.

They had originally planned to walk between Olivais and Chelas but ended up ordering a car after running late.

Only during the journey did they realise the driver's football background.

Content creator André Ramalho later shared the encounter, expressing his disbelief at discovering that the man behind the wheel had played at the European Championship and alongside some of Portugal's greatest players.

The passengers even took a photograph with Porfírio at the end of the journey.

A Very Different Life After Football

Porfírio's post-playing life has taken him far away from the spotlight.

He retired from professional football in the 2000s and later worked in coaching, including as an assistant with Sporting's senior and B teams.

His current work as an Uber driver represents a very different chapter from the days when he was playing in the Premier League and representing Portugal.

However, the story also highlights something often forgotten about former professional footballers: life after playing can take many different directions.

For Porfírio, an ordinary day driving through Lisbon unexpectedly brought him face-to-face with people who remembered his football career.

From Sharing a Dressing Room With Figo to Driving Through Lisbon

There is an unusual contrast at the heart of Porfírio's story.

In 1996, he was part of a Portugal squad containing future legends such as Figo and Rui Costa.

Decades later, he was unexpectedly recognised by passengers who had simply ordered an Uber.

It is a reminder of how quickly football careers can become part of history — even when the people who lived those moments have moved on to completely different lives.

And in this case, two passengers in Lisbon got a surprise they certainly were not expecting when their Uber arrived.
