Two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard has been forced to withdraw from the 2026 race after suffering a serious crash during Stage 15, bringing a dramatic and painful end to his campaign.
The Danish rider, who was second in the general classification and one of Tadej Pogacar’s main rivals, crashed around 20 kilometres from the finish, sustaining a broken collarbone that ruled him out of the race.
Vingegaard’s accident occurred on a fast section of the stage, where riders were navigating a tricky turn near a roundabout.
Reports indicate he lost control and fell heavily, with several other riders also caught up in the incident.
Medical checks later confirmed the severity of his injuries, including a fractured collarbone that will require surgery.
His team quickly made the decision to withdraw him from the race.
A team official admitted the situation was heartbreaking:
"“It is devastating that Jonas has had to leave the Tour… he was in a lot of pain and couldn’t continue.”"
Despite the disappointment, Vingegaard remained composed after the incident.
Speaking after his withdrawal, he reflected positively on his performance:
"“There’s no need to be down — it went surprisingly well.” "
His words showed resilience, even as his hopes of another Tour title ended abruptly.
Vingegaard’s exit has completely reshaped the Tour de France.
Before the crash, he was Pogacar’s closest challenger, pushing the Slovenian in the mountains and keeping the race competitive.
With him now out, Pogacar’s path to overall victory has become significantly clearer.
Remco Evenepoel, who won Stage 15, has moved into second place in the general classification, but still trails Pogacar by several minutes.
The build-up to Stage 15 also raised eyebrows across the peloton.
Both Vingegaard and Pogacar were reportedly subjected to early-morning anti-doping tests around 2am, which disrupted their rest before a demanding mountain stage.
Some riders suggested this may have impacted performance and focus, though there is no confirmed link to the crash itself.
Vingegaard will now undergo surgery and begin recovery, with his focus shifting to future races later in the season.
For the Tour de France, the race continues without one of its biggest stars, leaving fans wondering what might have been had he stayed in contention.
