Feyenoord Condemn Firework Chaos as Five Cambuur Fans Suffer Injuries

Feyenoord have strongly condemned the use of fireworks by some of their supporters after five SC Cambuur fans were injured during Sunday's Eredivisie clash in Leeuwarden.

The disturbing incident overshadowed Feyenoord's eventual 5–2 victory over the newly promoted side, with the match temporarily stopped after fireworks were launched from the away section towards the pitch and areas occupied by home supporters.

Match stopped after fireworks are thrown

The trouble occurred around the 12th minute, when supporters in Feyenoord's away section set off large numbers of red flares and threw fireworks.

Some of the pyrotechnics were directed towards sections containing Cambuur supporters, while another landed on the pitch close to Feyenoord goalkeeper Tjark Ernst.

Referee Danny Makkelie stopped the match and sent both teams inside as the situation was brought under control. Play eventually resumed after an interruption of around 20 minutes.

Five Cambuur supporters injured

Cambuur later confirmed that five supporters had suffered injuries, including burns, hearing damage and eye injuries.

The club condemned the behaviour and said it would work with the authorities to identify those responsible.

“Setting off and firing fireworks is completely unacceptable and has no place in a football stadium whatsoever,” Cambuur said.

The Dutch football association, KNVB, also indicated that firm action should follow against those responsible.

Feyenoord: ‘Simply terrible’

Feyenoord general manager Robert Eenhoorn expressed his dismay at what happened, stressing that the safety of supporters and players mattered more than the result.

He described the incident as “simply terrible” and pointed out that Feyenoord goalkeeper Ernst had also narrowly avoided a flare fired towards him.

Feyenoord have also said they firmly distance themselves from the behaviour and intend to review available footage to help identify those responsible.

The club's response comes despite their convincing result on the pitch.

Feyenoord eventually cruise to victory

Once play resumed, Feyenoord produced a dominant attacking display.

They established a 4–0 lead before half-time, with goals from Gjivai Zechiël, Luciano Valente, Mika Mármol and Ayase Ueda.

Cambuur responded after the interval through Rafik El Arguioui, who scored twice, but Zechiël eventually added another to complete Feyenoord's 5–2 victory.

The result kept Feyenoord unbeaten at the beginning of the new Eredivisie campaign.

Yet the scoreline was ultimately overshadowed by what had happened in the stands.

Dutch football faces another difficult conversation

The incident has also prompted fresh questions about how Dutch football handles pyrotechnics and crowd disorder.

KNVB manager of professional football competition affairs Jan Bluyssen said the association would examine whether its existing protocol remains appropriate.

The fact that the match continued after supporters were injured has also become part of the discussion, although officials noted that the match would have been abandoned had a player or match official been struck.

Leeuwarden mayor Foort van Oosten has also promised an investigation into the incident.

For Feyenoord, the focus will now turn towards identifying those responsible and ensuring the club's supporters do not become associated with further incidents of this nature.

Feyenoord may have left Leeuwarden with three points, but the fireworks incident ensured the result was anything but the main story.
