Alan Shearer believes Arsenal should seize a potential opening to sign Julian Alvarez from Atlético Madrid, arguing that the Argentina striker could take Mikel Arteta’s side to another level.

Alvarez has become one of the most intriguing names in the final stages of the transfer window, with his future at Atlético increasingly uncertain amid reported interest from Barcelona.

Shearer believes Arsenal could exploit the situation.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football, Shearer suggested there could be a small window for Arsenal to make their move if Atlético decide they must sell Alvarez.

The former England striker's argument is straightforward: if Arsenal can somehow bring the World Cup winner to north London, he believes the Premier League title race could be effectively settled.

That is a huge statement, particularly after Arsenal ended their 22-year wait for the Premier League title last season.

The Gunners are now attempting to defend their crown and have already made an impressive start to the new campaign.

Why Alvarez makes sense for Arsenal

Arsenal's interest in Alvarez is not new.

The 26-year-old would offer Arteta another elite attacking option capable of playing through the middle or operating in different positions across the frontline.

His record since joining Atlético from Manchester City has also been impressive.

Alvarez has scored 49 goals in 107 appearances for the Spanish club across his first two seasons, underlining the level of production Arsenal would be adding.

His versatility could also be particularly valuable over a long season involving the Premier League and Champions League.

Barcelona situation could open the door

The biggest complication is that Alvarez reportedly wants to leave Atlético and has been linked with Barcelona.

Atlético, however, are reluctant to sell their star striker to the Catalan club.

That could potentially create an opportunity for Arsenal to enter the picture.

Shearer believes that if Atlético are eventually forced to consider selling, Arsenal should be ready to act rather than allowing Barcelona to take control of the situation.

Micah Richards has similarly suggested that Arsenal should test Atlético's resolve with an offer for Alvarez.

Arsenal have already started strongly

There is another reason the Alvarez conversation is particularly interesting.

Arsenal have already begun their title defence impressively, beating newly promoted Coventry City 3–0 in their opening Premier League match.

That followed a 3–0 victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield, giving Arteta's team two convincing wins to begin the new campaign.

The Gunners therefore do not necessarily need a major attacking addition.

But adding Alvarez would give them another proven match-winner.

And that is precisely why Shearer believes Arsenal should be tempted to make an ambitious move.

Atlético face a difficult decision

For Atlético, selling Alvarez would represent a significant sporting decision.

The striker remains one of their most important attacking players, and replacing his quality late in the window would be extremely difficult.

His situation has already become uncomfortable, with Atlético supporters reportedly booing him during their draw with Villarreal following the speculation surrounding his future.

Whether that eventually leads to an exit remains uncertain.

Arsenal, meanwhile, appear to be monitoring the situation rather than having an agreement in place.

Could Alvarez really make Arsenal unstoppable?

That is the bigger question.

Arsenal already possess an attacking group featuring Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli and Viktor Gyökeres, alongside creative players such as Martin Ødegaard.

Alvarez would add another world-class option to that group.

Arteta has also insisted that he remains happy with his squad, while highlighting the potential for established players to contribute even more this season.

So while Shearer's suggestion is enticing, Arsenal still have to decide whether Alvarez is a realistic opportunity worth pursuing.

For now, the transfer remains speculation rather than a completed deal.

But if Atlético truly open the door, Shearer believes Arsenal should be standing there.

The champions already look strong. Shearer thinks Julian Alvarez could make them even harder to stop.
