Cole Palmer has declared himself “ready” and “hungry” for the new Premier League season after starring in Chelsea’s thrilling 3–2 victory over Fulham.

The England international was at the heart of Chelsea’s attacking display as Xabi Alonso began his Premier League reign with a win at Craven Cottage.

Palmer provided the assist for João Pedro’s opener before scoring Chelsea’s third goal himself, producing the kind of performance that will excite supporters after an injury-hit 2025/26 campaign.

Palmer starts the Alonso era in style

Chelsea could hardly have asked for a better opening.

João Pedro needed just 31 seconds to put the visitors ahead, finishing after Palmer helped create the opportunity.

Fulham responded through Josh King, but Chelsea regained their lead when record signing Morgan Rogers scored on his debut.

Palmer then added the third shortly after half-time, capitalising on a loose ball before finishing to restore Chelsea's two-goal advantage.

Fulham pulled another goal back through Gonzalo García, setting up a tense finish, but Chelsea held on for three points.

After the match, Palmer was asked whether he was ready for the demands of the new season.

His response was full of confidence.

“Did you not watch the game?”

Palmer joked before making it clear that he feels prepared for the campaign ahead.

The 24-year-old admitted that the previous season was difficult because of injuries, but explained that he had worked hard during the summer to improve his conditioning and reduce the chances of further problems.

He also spoke about taking time to rest and recharge before returning with renewed hunger.
That attitude was evident against Fulham.

A different Palmer could be coming

Palmer's performance was significant because Chelsea have been waiting to see him return to his most influential level.

His 2025/26 campaign was disrupted by recurring fitness problems, limiting his consistency and preventing him from maintaining the extraordinary standards he had previously established.

Against Fulham, however, he looked sharp, creative and dangerous.

He finished the night with a goal and an assist while playing a central role in Chelsea's attacking threat. ESPN described him as being at the centre of everything positive Chelsea produced.

And that could be an ominous sign for the rest of the Premier League.

Alonso has an exciting front three

Palmer was not the only Chelsea attacker to impress.

João Pedro, Palmer and Rogers all scored, giving Alonso an immediate glimpse of the attacking trio he hopes can become the foundation of his Chelsea team.

Alonso praised the three forwards after the match, describing their combination as an important part of what Chelsea are trying to build.

Rogers' debut was particularly encouraging, while João Pedro's instant impact continued his impressive start to life at Stamford Bridge.

For Palmer, having two dangerous attackers alongside him could create even more opportunities.

Chelsea still have work to do

Despite the excitement surrounding Chelsea's attack, the victory was far from perfect.

Fulham scored twice and repeatedly exposed weaknesses in the visitors' defence, while goalkeeper Robert Sánchez came under scrutiny for his involvement in both goals.

The defensive issues mean Alonso still has plenty to address despite beginning his league tenure with three points.

But the attacking performance provides reason for optimism.

If Palmer can remain fit and reproduce this level consistently, Chelsea could possess one of the Premier League's most dangerous attacking units.

The warning has been delivered

Palmer does not need to make extravagant predictions.

His message was simple: he is fit, motivated and ready to compete.
After watching him influence all three Chelsea goals at Fulham, the rest of the Premier League has already received a glimpse of what a fully fit Palmer could bring.

The new Alonso era has begun with a win.

And Palmer appears determined to make sure it becomes his season too.

Chelsea have made their start. Palmer has made his statement.
