The wait is over, and EA Sports FC 27 has already sparked plenty of debate. Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland sit at the summit of the men's rankings, while Lionel Messi has enjoyed a remarkable ratings revival and Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has suffered one of the biggest drops among the game's elite.
EA Sports has revealed its top 27 ratings ahead of FC 27's September 25 release, giving fans their first major look at how the game's leading stars have been assessed.
Mbappé Finally Has Company at the Top
Mbappé remains at 91 overall, but the Real Madrid forward is no longer alone at the top.
Haaland has climbed from 90 to 91, bringing Manchester City's prolific striker level with Mbappé as the joint-highest-rated men's player.
It creates an intriguing split at the top. Mbappé's combination of pace, dribbling and attacking versatility has made him one of the most feared players in the game, while Haaland's extraordinary finishing and physical presence have helped him close the gap.
The pair now sit one rating point clear of a group of stars rated 90.
Among them are Rodri, Ousmane Dembélé, Harry Kane and Michael Olise, with Olise receiving one of the most eye-catching improvements after his breakthrough campaign in Germany.
Messi's Three-Point Revival Changes the Conversation
Perhaps the most surprising upgrade belongs to Lionel Messi.
The Inter Miami star has jumped from 86 to 89 overall, a three-point improvement that places him back among the game's elite players.
The upgrade follows his impressive 2026 campaign with Argentina, including his performances at the World Cup.
For a player now in the later stages of his career, such a significant increase is a strong statement from EA Sports. Messi may no longer occupy the game's highest rating, but an 89 still places him firmly among its most highly rated players.
He is joined in that bracket by Bruno Fernandes, who has risen from 87 to 89 following an outstanding season with Manchester United.
Van Dijk Takes One of the Biggest Hits
While Messi's rating has gone up three points, another veteran has moved sharply in the opposite direction.
Virgil van Dijk has dropped from 90 to 88 overall.
The Liverpool captain remains one of the highest-rated defenders in FC 27, but the two-point reduction is likely to attract plenty of attention from Liverpool supporters and players who have relied on him in previous editions.
Van Dijk is now level with several other major names, including William Saliba, Declan Rice, Joshua Kimmich and Luis Díaz.
The downgrade is particularly notable because Van Dijk had remained one of the game's defensive benchmarks for years.
The 90 Club Is Packed With Elite Talent
Although Mbappé and Haaland occupy the top spot, the ratings reveal shows just how competitive the highest tier has become.
Rodri and Dembélé remain at 90, while Kane and Olise have also reached that mark. Other leading players featured among the top ratings include Pedri, Lamine Yamal, Thibaut Courtois and Jude Bellingham.
That means the difference between the game's very best players is becoming increasingly narrow.
A one-point difference separates the 91-rated leaders from the 90-rated group, while several established superstars sit immediately below them.
For Ultimate Team players and Career Mode fans, those tiny rating differences could become a major talking point once the full database is available.
The Women's Rankings Have Their Own New Battle
The ratings reveal is not limited to the men's game.
Alexia Putellas remains the highest-rated women's player at 91 overall, while Aitana Bonmatí has dropped from 91 to 90.
Manchester City's Khadija Shaw has also reached 90, while Yui Hasegawa has received a substantial improvement from 85 to 88.
Barcelona's Claudia Pina is another notable riser, moving from 86 to 89.
The changes ensure that the women's rankings are just as interesting as the men's ahead of launch.
More Ratings Are Still Coming
The top 27 reveal is only the beginning.
EA Sports is expected to unveil the wider player database in stages, with more than 21,000 players set to feature in the game. FC 27 is scheduled for worldwide release on September 25, 2026, with early access for Ultimate Edition players beginning on September 18.
That leaves plenty of room for more surprises.
There will be further debates over which players have been underrated, which stars have received deserved boosts and which established names have suffered unexpected downgrades.
But the first major verdict is already clear.
Mbappé and Haaland are sharing the throne, Messi has produced one of the game's biggest rating revivals, and Van Dijk has suddenly found himself two points lower than he was in FC 26.
The ratings debate has officially begun.
