The 26-year-old midfielder returns to Italy after previously playing for Napoli and Torino, giving Atalanta another versatile attacking option for the new campaign.

Elmas returns to Serie A

Atalanta officially announced the deal on Saturday, confirming that Elmas has joined on loan from Leipzig with an option to make the transfer permanent. The clubs have not disclosed the financial terms of the agreement.

Elmas already has extensive Serie A experience, having made 189 appearances in the competition for Napoli and Torino, scoring 19 goals and providing 13 assists.

He also played an important role in Napoli's 2022–23 Serie A title-winning campaign.

A reunion with Giuntoli

The move reunites Elmas with Cristiano Giuntoli, who previously worked with the midfielder during his time at Napoli.

Elmas joined Napoli from Fenerbahçe in 2019 before moving to RB Leipzig in January 2024.

His spell in Germany has been less productive, making a return to Italy an opportunity to revive his career.

Atalanta will now hope the midfielder can reproduce the qualities that made him such an important player in Naples.

What Elmas brings to Atalanta

Elmas' versatility is one of his biggest strengths.

He can operate in midfield or higher up the pitch, giving Atalanta additional tactical flexibility.

With the club looking to compete across domestic and European football, that versatility could prove particularly valuable throughout the season.

The option to buy also gives Atalanta the opportunity to assess Elmas before deciding whether to make his move permanent.

For Elmas, meanwhile, the transfer represents another chance to establish himself in Serie A — the league where he previously enjoyed the most successful period of his career.
