‘The Squad Is Closed’ — Mourinho Shuts Down Real Madrid Transfer Talk but Leaves Door Open for Exits

José Mourinho has effectively closed Real Madrid’s door to further summer signings, insisting he is happy with his squad while admitting unexpected departures could still happen before the transfer window shuts.

The Portuguese manager delivered the update ahead of Real Madrid’s first home LaLiga match of the season against Real Sociedad, making it clear that he does not currently want another addition to his squad.

Mourinho has no more signings in mind

Mourinho was asked whether Real Madrid could still make changes before the end of the window.

His response was decisive.

“For me, the squad is closed.”

The manager added that he is very happy with the players available to him and has not asked the club to bring anyone else in.

That represents a significant statement given the amount of transfer speculation surrounding Madrid throughout the summer.

The club missed out on Rodri, who ultimately joined Barcelona, but Mourinho has made it clear that he does not intend to panic-buy a replacement.

The door is not completely shut

Despite his strong declaration, Mourinho was careful not to say that absolutely nothing could happen.

The transfer window remains open, meaning circumstances outside the manager's control could still force Real Madrid into action.

A player could request a move, for example, or an offer could arrive that the club considers impossible to reject.

Mourinho therefore accepts that the squad could still change — but only if something unexpected happens.

His preference is clear: keep the group together.

Rodri disappointment will not change the plan

Real Madrid's failure to sign Rodri has been one of the biggest talking points surrounding Mourinho's squad.

The manager previously revealed that he spoke to the midfielder about a potential move to Madrid but sensed doubts from the player, who eventually chose Barcelona.

That left Madrid without the marquee midfield signing many supporters had hoped for.

Mourinho, however, believes his current options are sufficient.

Rather than building the midfield around rigid positional labels, the manager has emphasised flexibility, with players such as Aurélien Tchouaméni, Eduardo Camavinga, Federico Valverde and Bernardo Silva capable of performing different roles.

Madrid still have plenty of attacking quality

Mourinho also has plenty of attacking talent at his disposal.

Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Jr and Jude Bellingham give Real Madrid a formidable collection of attacking options, while the manager has described the challenge of fitting his best players into the same XI as a positive problem to have.

Real Madrid have already begun Mourinho's second spell with a victory, beating Espanyol 2–1 thanks to a late goal from debutant Carlos Espí.

The manager will now take charge of his first competitive match at the Santiago Bernabéu against Real Sociedad.

Late exits remain possible

While Mourinho does not expect another arrival, he has acknowledged that departures remain possible.

A player who finds himself out of the manager's plans could ask to leave, while a sufficiently attractive offer could tempt the club into approving a sale.

That means the final days of the window could still produce movement at the Bernabéu.

But unless something unexpected happens, Mourinho appears content to work with the group already assembled.

No new signing is currently on his wish list. The squad is closed — but the transfer window has not completely stopped moving.
