Carrick Told to Act Fast as Luke Shaw Comes Under Fire After Ipswich Win

Manchester United may have cruised to a 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town, but Luke Shaw's latest defensive display has sparked fresh calls for Michael Carrick to strengthen at left-back before the transfer window closes.

The England international was heavily criticised after being exposed for Ipswich's opening goal at Old Trafford, with talkSPORT pundit Alex Crook going as far as describing Shaw as “part of the problem” at Manchester United

Shaw exposed again

United were stunned early in the match when Abdul Fatawu drove past Shaw down Ipswich's right before delivering the ball towards the back post.

Leif Davis had space to meet the cross and produced an excellent finish to put the visitors ahead.

The goal immediately raised questions about United's defending, particularly the ease with which Fatawu was able to bypass Shaw.

For Crook, it was evidence of a problem that has persisted for too long.

He argued that Shaw's performances have repeatedly contributed to United's inability to keep clean sheets and questioned why the club have yet to bring in a genuine replacement.

Carrick's defensive problem remains

The criticism comes despite United eventually producing an emphatic response.

Bruno Fernandes inspired the comeback with a hat-trick, while Harry Maguire's effort was deflected into his own net by Jacob Greaves and Bryan Mbeumo also found the net.

Ipswich added a late consolation through Chuba Akpom, but United secured an important three points.

Yet the result did not completely disguise the defensive concerns.

United conceded twice and were vulnerable during several periods, reinforcing the argument that Carrick still needs greater quality and reliability at full-back.

Carrick urged to strengthen

The criticism comes at a particularly important time.

Manchester United have been searching for a left-back throughout the summer, but the club have yet to complete the signing of a new player in that position.

Newcastle's Lewis Hall has been discussed as one possible target, although Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle has played down suggestions that the defender could leave.

United have also been linked with Myles Lewis-Skelly, although that option has subsequently been denied.

With the transfer window approaching its conclusion, Carrick and United's recruitment team now have limited time to address the position.

A difficult decision over Shaw

Shaw's situation is complicated by his experience and previous importance to Manchester United.

At his best, the 31-year-old remains capable of contributing significantly in possession and providing attacking width from the left.

The problem is consistency.

After another difficult outing, questions are once again being asked about whether United can rely on him as their first-choice option throughout a full Premier League campaign.

Carrick must therefore decide whether Shaw can recover his best form or whether the club needs to bring in another left-back capable of challenging for the starting position immediately.

The win cannot hide everything

United's 5-2 victory was exactly the response Carrick wanted after the shock defeat to Hull City on the opening weekend.

But the performance also demonstrated why the manager cannot afford to become complacent.

The attack showed enough quality to score five goals and overturn an early deficit.

The defence, however, continues to provide reasons for concern.

And with Premier League opponents unlikely to be as forgiving as Ipswich were during United's comeback, those weaknesses could become costly.

Michael Carrick has been given a warning despite Manchester United's emphatic victory — and the message from his critics is clear: if United want to compete at the top end of the Premier League, the left-back position can no longer be ignored.
