Guglielmo Vicario is heading back to Italy, with Juventus agreeing a deal to sign the Tottenham goalkeeper after switching their attention to the Italian following the collapse of their pursuit of Emiliano Martínez.

The move brings an unexpected end to Vicario's Tottenham career after three seasons in north London.

Juventus have agreed a deal for the 29-year-old, with the transfer understood to be structured as an initial loan with an option to buy.

Juventus Find Their Goalkeeper

The deal comes after a frantic search for a new goalkeeper.

Juventus had initially pursued Aston Villa's Emiliano Martínez, but that operation collapsed over the financial demands involved.

The Italian giants subsequently turned their attention towards Vicario, who had already emerged as an attractive alternative.

This time, they got their man.
Vicario's desire to return to Serie A also helped push the transfer forward, with the goalkeeper now set for a fresh chapter in Italian football.

From Tottenham No. 1 to Juventus

Vicario arrived at Tottenham from Empoli in 2023 and quickly established himself as the club's first-choice goalkeeper.

His first Premier League season was particularly impressive, as he started all 38 league matches and helped Spurs finish fifth.

He also became an important part of Tottenham's run to the 2024/25 Europa League title, giving him the first major trophy of his senior career.

But his position at the club changed during the following period.

After returning from injury, Vicario found himself behind Antonín Kinský in Tottenham's goalkeeping hierarchy under Roberto De Zerbi.

He was subsequently left out of the club's pre-season plans, making an exit increasingly likely.

A Return to Familiar Ground

For Vicario, Juventus represents a return to the country where his professional career was built.

Before joining Tottenham, he played for a number of Italian clubs, including Venezia, Cagliari and Empoli.

Now he returns to Serie A with one of the country's biggest clubs and a completely different set of expectations.

Juventus will expect him to compete immediately for the starting role and provide stability between the posts.

The Martínez Saga Opens the Door

The timing of the transfer is particularly striking.

Juventus had spent much of their recent goalkeeper search trying to solve the Martínez situation before abandoning the move.
With that deal off, Vicario became the priority.

The Italian club's decision to move quickly meant Tottenham were able to find a solution for a goalkeeper who was no longer first choice, while Juventus secured an experienced option without committing immediately to a permanent transfer.

It is a deal that makes sense for both sides.

What It Means for Tottenham

Tottenham now have greater clarity in goal.

Kinský has been elevated in the pecking order, while Martin Dúbravka and Brandon Austin provide further options.

Cartilage Free Captain
Vicario's departure therefore represents less of a crisis than it might have been when he was firmly established as Spurs' No. 1.

For the goalkeeper himself, however, the move offers the opportunity to become a leading figure again.
