The opening weeks of the 2026/27 Premier League season have already produced some outstanding goalkeeping performances, with several shot-stoppers playing crucial roles for their clubs.
While clean sheets often receive the headlines, the number of saves made can tell another story. Some goalkeepers have been kept extremely busy, with their interventions preventing difficult situations from becoming even worse.
Kjell Scherpen has emerged as one of the busiest goalkeepers during August, while several established Premier League names have also featured prominently among the division's top performers.
Scherpen Leads the Way
Ipswich Town goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen has been one of the standout shot-stoppers during the opening month, recording 13 saves.
His workload highlights the importance of his performances for Ipswich, particularly as newly promoted sides face the challenge of adapting to the Premier League's intensity.
The Dutch goalkeeper's early contribution has provided Ipswich with an important last line of defence, and his performances could become increasingly significant as the season develops.
Established Names Close Behind
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker, Bournemouth's Đorđe Petrović and Newcastle United goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček are among those immediately behind Scherpen, with nine saves each.
Everton's Jordan Pickford is also high on the list with eight saves.
Pickford's reputation as one of the Premier League's most reliable goalkeepers received another boost in August after he was included among the six nominees for the Coca-Cola Save of the Month award. Alisson and Petrović were also shortlisted, alongside Hull City's Konstantinos Tzolakis.
More Than Just Numbers
Save totals do not tell the entire story. A goalkeeper facing more shots may simply play behind a defence that allows more attempts on goal.
That makes save percentage, quality of chances faced and goals conceded important statistics when judging overall performance.
Still, the August figures underline how important goalkeepers have already been in the opening weeks of the campaign.
With the season still in its early stages, the rankings are likely to change rapidly. One thing is already clear: the Premier League's goalkeepers have wasted little time making their presence felt.
