Coventry City have suffered a huge setback just days before their return to the Premier League, with Frank Lampard confirming that Haji Wright could be sidelined for up to 12 weeks with a serious quad injury.

The American striker will miss Friday’s opening match against reigning champions Arsenal, denying him the chance to make his Premier League debut after playing a major role in Coventry’s promotion last season.

Lampard confirmed the extent of the problem ahead of Coventry’s first top-flight campaign in 25 years.

Wright's Premier League dream suffers cruel setback
The timing could hardly be worse for Wright.
The 28-year-old was one of Coventry's most important attacking players during their Championship-winning campaign, scoring 17 goals as Lampard's side secured promotion to the Premier League.

His performances earned him a place in the 2025/26 Championship Team of the Season, while his overall Coventry record has now reached 49 goals since arriving from Antalyaspor in 2023.

After helping the Sky Blues reach the top flight for the first time since 2001, Wright was expected to be one of the key figures in their survival campaign.
Instead, he now faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Lampard suddenly has a major attacking problem
Wright's absence leaves Lampard without one of the forwards who helped fire Coventry to promotion.
The manager, however, has moved quickly to strengthen his attacking options.
Coventry have completed the signing of Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest in a reported £9 million deal, while they have also brought in Sidiki Cherif from Fenerbahçe.

Those additions could now become even more important.
With Wright unavailable, Lampard will need his new forwards and existing options such as Ellis Simms and Brandon Thomas-Asante to carry more of the goalscoring burden.

The injury comes just before perhaps the toughest possible introduction to life back in the top flight.

There is at least one positive for Lampard.
Coventry have been extremely active in the transfer market and have broken their transfer record four times this summer. Their biggest signing so far is Ghanaian midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi, who arrived for around £23.1 million.

The club's recruitment means Lampard has more depth than he did during last season's promotion campaign.
Now that depth will be tested immediately.
Wright's recovery timeline is also not completely fixed. Lampard said the striker will be out for a number of weeks and potentially up to 12 weeks, rather than giving a definitive return date.
