Tottenham Hotspur have suffered a major setback with Mykhailo Mudryk reportedly facing six to eight weeks on the sidelines after sustaining an ankle injury in training.
The Ukraine international had only just begun a new chapter in his career after completing a season-long loan move from Chelsea on transfer deadline day. The injury comes at a particularly frustrating time, with Mudryk having made his first competitive appearance in almost two years just days before the setback.
Injury Comes Just Days After Spurs Debut
Mudryk reportedly suffered the ankle problem during training on Monday and is understood to have been seen wearing a protective boot.
The 25-year-old had made his Tottenham debut as a 74th-minute substitute during Saturday's goalless Premier League draw against Nottingham Forest. It was his first senior competitive appearance since November 2024.
The appearance itself was an important moment for the winger, who had spent a lengthy period away from competitive football.
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi had previously confirmed that Mudryk was ready to contribute for a limited period against Forest after training with the squad during the week.
De Zerbi said before the match that Mudryk was capable of playing around 15 to 30 minutes as he continued to rebuild his fitness.
Unfortunately for both player and club, his return has now been interrupted.
Another Setback for Mudryk
The timing of the injury is particularly disappointing because Mudryk's move to Tottenham represented an opportunity to revive his career.
His reunion with De Zerbi was one of the major talking points surrounding the transfer. The pair previously worked together at Shakhtar Donetsk, where Mudryk developed into one of Ukraine's most promising attacking players.
Tottenham officially announced his arrival on September 1, with the winger describing his reunion with De Zerbi as an exciting opportunity. The club highlighted his pace, creativity and ability to operate on either wing.
Now, instead of building momentum, Mudryk faces another period of rehabilitation.
Tottenham's Attack Takes Another Blow
The injury could also create problems for De Zerbi.
Tottenham already struggled to produce attacking threat during the 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest. Reuters reported that Spurs failed to register a shot on target in the match and remained without a league goal after their opening three Premier League games.
Mudryk was brought in partly to provide additional pace and creativity in the wide areas.
His absence therefore leaves De Zerbi with fewer options as Tottenham attempt to improve their attacking output.
The club have invested heavily in rebuilding the squad, but the early weeks of the season have highlighted the importance of having enough attacking depth.
What Happens Next?
If the reported six-to-eight-week recovery period is accurate, Mudryk could miss a significant run of Premier League and cup fixtures.
Tottenham will hope the injury does not develop into a longer-term problem and that the winger can return without another interruption to his comeback.
For Mudryk, the priority will be straightforward: recover properly, rebuild his fitness and finally get the sustained run of football he has been waiting for.
