Nico O’Reilly has left England’s camp and returned to Manchester City after suffering an injury, ruling him out of the Three Lions’ remaining UEFA Nations League fixtures during the current international window.

The 21-year-old had already missed England’s 2-0 victory over Czechia after playing the full 90 minutes against Spain, and he will now undergo further assessment with his club.

O’Reilly’s Nations League campaign ends prematurely

O’Reilly’s absence was first revealed ahead of England’s trip to Prague to face Czechia.

He and Arsenal defender Ezri Konsa both missed training before that match, with Tuchel describing their problems as minor issues that still required assessment.

O’Reilly was subsequently left out of the matchday squad for the 2-0 victory, while Lewis Hall came into the starting XI at left-back.

Following the Czechia match, Tuchel had initially hoped that O’Reilly could recover in time for England’s remaining games.

The manager explained that the midfielder would remain with the squad because England still had two fixtures to play and wanted to give him every opportunity to become available.

However, after further assessment, O’Reilly has now returned to Manchester City instead.

Manchester City will now assess O’Reilly

The precise nature and severity of O’Reilly’s latest injury have not been publicly disclosed.

Reports indicate that he is returning to Manchester City to receive treatment and undergo further medical assessment.

That means there is currently no confirmed recovery timetable for the player.

For City, the priority will be determining the extent of the problem and how long O’Reilly could be unavailable once he returns to club football.

The timing will also be closely monitored because the international break is approaching its conclusion, with Premier League fixtures to follow shortly afterwards.

Tuchel will not call up a replacement

England have decided not to bring another player into the senior squad following O’Reilly’s departure.

That leaves Tuchel to work with his existing options for the remaining Nations League fixtures.

Lewis Hall has already demonstrated that he can operate in the position, starting England’s victory over Czechia after O’Reilly was ruled out.

The situation also highlights the growing demands on Tuchel’s squad during a four-match international window. England’s original squad was selected for matches against Spain, Czechia, Croatia and another meeting with Czechia between 21 September and 6 October.

Another setback for a player making his mark

O’Reilly’s withdrawal is particularly unfortunate given his progress with England.

The Manchester City player was selected in Tuchel’s squad following an impressive period at club level and started the opening Nations League match against Spain.

His ability to operate in multiple positions has made him a useful option for both club and country, while his performance against Spain showed why Tuchel had trusted him from the start.

Now, instead of continuing his international involvement, O’Reilly will focus on recovering with Manchester City.

The immediate priority is therefore not another England appearance, but establishing exactly what the injury means for his availability at club level.

England face Croatia without O’Reilly

England’s next Nations League challenge comes against Croatia on Saturday, 3 October, before the Three Lions return to Wembley to face Czechia again on 6 October.

O’Reilly will play no part in either fixture.

For Tuchel, the focus now turns to finding the right balance with the players available while keeping the remaining members of the squad fit during a demanding international window.

For O’Reilly, meanwhile, the next important update will come from Manchester City once the club has completed its assessment of his injury.

Until then, the exact recovery period remains unclear.
