Cristiano Ronaldo has finally revealed his version of the events that led to his dramatic departure from Portugal's training camp, accusing head coach Jorge Jesus of breaking an agreement over his involvement with the national team.

In an extensive statement published on Tuesday, Ronaldo detailed a series of conversations with Jesus, beginning after the 2026 World Cup and continuing through Portugal's latest Nations League camp.

The Portugal captain said he initially supported Jesus' appointment and was pleased when the former Al Nassr coach took charge. However, he claims their relationship deteriorated after an agreement over his playing schedule was not followed.

Ronaldo Says He Initially Backed Jorge Jesus

Ronaldo revealed that he had initially planned to leave the Portugal national team after the 2026 World Cup.

However, Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença reportedly asked him to reconsider because the FPF wanted him to continue representing the country.

Ronaldo was then asked for his opinion on the coaching candidates being considered.

He said he supported the appointment of Jesus and believed it was the right decision.

The 41-year-old later met Jesus in person, where he claims the coach told him that he was fundamental to his project and presented a plan for managing his playing time.

The Agreement Over Ronaldo's Playing Time

According to Ronaldo, Jesus told him that he would play Portugal's first and final matches of the international camp, while his minutes would be managed because of his physical condition.

Ronaldo said Jesus also suggested that he could remain in Portugal rather than travel for the matches in Norway and Denmark.

The veteran forward rejected that proposal.

He explained that remaining behind while still captaining the national team would not set the right example.

Jesus eventually agreed with Ronaldo's position, according to the player's account.

Ronaldo's Surprise Over the Norway Match

The situation changed dramatically before Portugal's match against Norway.

Ronaldo said he had expected not to play because his original schedule had him returning for the match at the Dragão.

However, an assistant coach approached him during lunch and told him that Jesus wanted to speak with him.

Ronaldo claims the coach asked whether he was physically capable of playing 30 minutes.

He said yes.

According to Ronaldo, Jesus then told him to prepare because he would play those 30 minutes.

Ronaldo subsequently warmed up from half-time but was never introduced.

That, he says, was the moment the trust between the two men was broken.

“The coach had broken his word to me,” Ronaldo stated.

Ronaldo Says the Dispute Went Beyond Football

Ronaldo's statement suggests that the issue was not simply about being left on the bench.

He stressed that he had never demanded playing time and had accepted decisions made by coaches throughout his international career.

Instead, he said the problem was the breakdown of trust after an agreement had allegedly been made and then not followed.

The forward also revealed that another meeting later took place involving himself, Jesus and Al Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho, who had been present during earlier discussions.

Ronaldo claims they agreed on how the situation would be addressed publicly.

Ronaldo Accuses Jesus of Breaking His Word Again

According to Ronaldo, Jesus agreed to explain the situation during a press conference and acknowledge that Ronaldo had not demanded minutes.

Ronaldo says the coach was also expected to admit that asking him to warm up without eventually bringing him onto the pitch had been a mistake.

However, Ronaldo claims Jesus did not follow through with what had been agreed privately.

That became, in Ronaldo's account, the second time the coach had broken his word.

The disagreement ultimately contributed to Ronaldo's decision to leave the Portugal camp.

Ronaldo Accepts Responsibility for Leaving

Despite his criticism of Jesus, Ronaldo also admitted that leaving the national-team camp was a mistake.

He apologised to his teammates and supporters, acknowledging that he should not have left in the manner he did.

That admission is significant because Portugal could still impose disciplinary action over his departure.

The Portuguese Football Federation has previously indicated that Ronaldo's return remains possible, while Jesus has also left the door open for the veteran forward to rejoin the squad.

Ronaldo's Portugal Future Is Not Over

Despite the dramatic fallout, Ronaldo has made clear that he does not consider his international career finished.

Reports on his full statement indicate that the Portugal captain remains willing to represent the country after serving any potential suspension.

That means the latest controversy is not necessarily the final chapter of Ronaldo's Portugal career.

Instead, the situation could develop into another major test for the relationship between the country's record goalscorer and its new head coach.

Ronaldo's message is ultimately about trust.

He believes coaches have every right to make technical decisions, but he expects private agreements to be respected.

For now, the ball is back in the hands of Portugal, Jorge Jesus and the federation.
