Why Republic of Ireland Players Refused to Shake Hands With Israel Before 3-0 Nations League Win

The Republic of Ireland's 3–0 Nations League victory over Israel was preceded by an unusual moment that immediately attracted attention.

When the two teams completed the pre-match formalities in Debrecen, Hungary, the Irish players did not take part in the traditional handshake with their Israeli opponents.

Ireland captain Dara O'Shea shook hands with the match officials but kept his hands behind his back when he approached Israel captain Manor Solomon.

The gesture was deliberate.

It was part of a series of measures agreed by the Irish squad after days of intense debate surrounding the fixture and the wider Israel-Gaza conflict.

Ireland Had Already Agreed on the Protest

The decision did not come suddenly on the pitch.

The Republic of Ireland squad held lengthy discussions before the match, with players debating whether they should even participate in the fixture.

According to the Football Association of Ireland, a significant majority of the squad ultimately voted to play.

However, the players also agreed on measures that would communicate their discomfort with the circumstances surrounding the match.

Those included wearing black armbands, not participating in the pre-match handshake and not exchanging pennants with the Israeli team.

That agreement explains why the handshake was absent despite both teams proceeding with the fixture.

The Irish Players Also Bowed Their Heads

The gesture went beyond the handshake.

During Israel's national anthem, the Irish players stood with their heads bowed and their hands behind their backs.

The black armbands were worn throughout the match.

FAI chief executive David Courell said the armbands were intended to recognise lives lost in the conflict.

The actions therefore formed part of a coordinated response from the Irish squad rather than an individual decision made by O'Shea.

Gavin Bazunu Took a Different Decision

The controversy surrounding the fixture also led Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu to withdraw from the squad.

Bazunu said his decision was based on his personal belief that participating in the matches was wrong because of the loss of innocent lives.

He made clear that his decision was not directed against Israeli people or the Jewish community, but was based on his opposition to the situation in Gaza.

Unlike Bazunu, the majority of the Irish squad decided to play.

Their solution was to fulfil the fixture while using the agreed pre-match gestures to express their position.

Ireland Let the Football Do the Talking

Once the match started, Ireland quickly shifted the focus back towards football.

Troy Parrott opened the scoring before Adam Idah doubled the advantage just minutes later.

Jack Moylan then made it 3–0 before half-time, putting Ireland firmly in control.

Israel improved after the break and forced Ireland goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher into important saves, but Ireland held on for a comprehensive victory.

The result gave Ireland their first points of the Nations League campaign after their opening defeat by Kosovo.

The Controversy Will Continue Into the Return Fixture

The two nations are scheduled to meet again on 4 October, with the Republic of Ireland listed as the home side for the return fixture.

However, that match will take place at TSC Arena in Bačka Topola, Serbia, rather than in Ireland.

The fixture has already attracted significant attention because of the circumstances surrounding the first meeting.

For Ireland, however, the immediate sporting outcome was clear.

They entered one of the most politically charged matches in their recent international history, carried out the protest measures agreed by the squad and then produced a convincing 3–0 victory.

The handshake may have been absent.

But the Irish players made their position clear before turning their attention to the football.
