Jürgen Klopp's first Germany squad announcement was always going to attract attention.

Marc-André ter Stegen also returns to the squad and has been identified by Klopp as Germany's current first-choice goalkeeper following Manuel Neuer's international retirement.

Klopp stressed the importance of having a stable spine while surrounding established players with younger talent.

That balance could become one of the defining features of his Germany project.

Klopp inherited a Germany team that failed to meet expectations at the last World Cup.

His response has been to cast a much wider net.

Rather than immediately settle on a fixed group, the new coach is using the Nations League schedule to gather information on a huge number of players.

That makes the Keidel call-up more significant than a single surprise selection.
