🚨 From U21s to Three Lions: Rico Lewis Ends England Exile as Tuchel Calls Up Man City Defender

Rico Lewis has been handed a route back into the England senior squad after Thomas Tuchel called up the Manchester City defender from the Under-21s as cover for injured teammate Nico O’Reilly.

The 21-year-old has not featured for the Three Lions since November 2024, but his return comes after helping England’s U21s secure qualification for the 2027 European Championship.

Tuchel Turns to Rico Lewis

Thomas Tuchel has added Rico Lewis to England’s senior squad ahead of Tuesday’s UEFA Nations League meeting with Czechia at Wembley.

Lewis joins the senior group from Lee Carsley’s Under-21 side after Nico O’Reilly was withdrawn from the squad and returned to Manchester City for further assessment.

England had initially indicated that no replacement would be called up for O’Reilly, but Tuchel has now turned to Lewis as he looks to strengthen his defensive options for the final match of the international window.

The Manchester City academy graduate is capable of playing at right-back, left-back and in midfield, giving Tuchel additional flexibility.

A Long-Awaited England Return

Lewis has five senior England caps but has been away from the Three Lions setup for almost two years.

His last appearance came in November 2024, when he started at left-back in England’s 3-0 Nations League victory over Greece.

Since then, Lewis has remained part of England’s wider pathway and was selected by Carsley for the latest Under-21 qualifiers.

His promotion now gives him another opportunity to impress Tuchel and potentially force his way back into the senior manager’s longer-term plans.

Lewis Comes From the U21s

The call-up follows a productive international break with England’s Under-21s.

Lewis was part of the group that helped secure qualification for the 2027 UEFA Under-21 European Championship, with England facing Kazakhstan and Slovakia during the current window.

His return to the senior squad therefore comes at a significant moment in his international career.

Having already experienced senior football under Gareth Southgate and Lee Carsley, Lewis will now get the chance to work under Tuchel for the first time at senior level.

O’Reilly’s Injury Opens the Door

Lewis' opportunity comes directly after O’Reilly’s withdrawal.

The Manchester City youngster missed England’s 2-0 win over Czechia in Prague after suffering a knock and subsequently returned to his club for further assessment.

O’Reilly had been part of Tuchel’s original squad, but his absence has created room for another Manchester City player to step up.

For Lewis, what initially looked like a return to England’s senior setup that might have taken longer has arrived sooner than expected.

A Chance to Impress Tuchel

Lewis has made five senior appearances for England since his debut in November 2023.

His versatility has long been one of his biggest strengths, while his development at Manchester City has given him experience across several positions.

However, opportunities at club level have been limited during the opening part of the 2026/27 campaign, making his latest England call-up particularly important.

Tuchel now has the opportunity to assess Lewis closely within the senior environment before England face Czechia at Wembley on Tuesday.

For Lewis, the immediate objective is simple: make the most of his unexpected return.

England’s Final Nations League Test

England head into Tuesday’s meeting with Czechia after a remarkable 7-0 victory over Croatia in Rijeka.

The Three Lions currently sit second in their Nations League group behind Spain, with the upcoming Wembley fixture providing another opportunity to strengthen their position.

Lewis may have started the international break with the Under-21s, but he could now finish it alongside England’s senior stars.

After nearly two years away, the road back to the Three Lions has opened again.
