Sergen Yalçın has officially been appointed the new head coach of the Türkiye national team, replacing Vincenzo Montella after the Italian's departure earlier this month. The 53-year-old has signed a four-year agreement and now takes charge of his country for the first time as a senior international manager.

Sergen Yalçın Takes Charge of Türkiye

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) confirmed on Tuesday that Sergen Yalçın has been appointed as the new head coach of the national team.

Yalçın will sign a four-year contract and becomes the successor to Vincenzo Montella, who left his position following a difficult run of results.

The appointment represents a major new chapter for Yalçın, who moves from club management into the biggest coaching position in Turkish football.

From Türkiye International to National Team Boss

Yalçın knows the Turkish national team from his own playing career.

The former midfielder earned 37 international caps and scored five goals between 1994 and 2003.

He represented Türkiye at the 1996 and 2000 European Championships and also enjoyed a distinguished club career with Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray and Trabzonspor.

Now, more than two decades after his final international appearance, Yalçın returns to the national team as its head coach.

The Beşiktaş Success That Earned Him the Job

Yalçın's biggest achievement as a manager came with Beşiktaş during the 2020/21 season.

He guided the Istanbul giants to the Süper Lig title and Turkish Cup, completing a domestic double.

That campaign also made Yalçın the first and only person in Beşiktaş history to win the Turkish league both as a player and as a manager.

His managerial career has also included spells with Gaziantepspor, Sivasspor, Kayserispor, Eskişehirspor, Konyaspor, Alanyaspor, Yeni Malatyaspor and Antalyaspor.

Why Montella Was Replaced

Yalçın inherits a Türkiye side that needs a major reset.

Montella left the position earlier this month after Türkiye lost all four of their Nations League matches during the latest international window.

Those results included defeats to Italy, France and Belgium, leaving Türkiye bottom of Nations League Group A1.

Türkiye had also endured a disappointing 2026 World Cup campaign, exiting during the group stage despite defeating the United States in their final match.

The TFF has now turned to one of the country's most recognisable football figures to lead the rebuild.

Yalçın's Message to the Turkish Public

Following the agreement, Yalçın described the national-team position as a huge honour.

He emphasised the importance of representing Türkiye and expressed hope that the team could unite the country and enjoy a successful period with the support of the Turkish public.

For Yalçın, the opportunity is also a chance to bring his club-management experience onto the international stage.

A New Era Begins

Yalçın's appointment marks his first senior national-team coaching role.

He arrives with domestic silverware on his CV, extensive experience in Turkish football and a deep connection with the national team from his playing days.

The challenge now is considerably bigger.

Türkiye must recover from their difficult Nations League start and rebuild confidence following their World Cup disappointment.

For Yalçın, the next chapter begins with the national team — and expectations will be high.
