Giovanni van Bronckhorst has admitted he was surprised by the Netherlands’ decision to appoint Xavi Hernández as their new head coach, revealing that even those close to the former Barcelona midfielder did not see the move coming.

The appointment has created one of the biggest talking points in Dutch football, with Xavi becoming the Netherlands' first foreign head coach in 48 years.
