Marc Cucurella has given an early insight into life at Real Madrid under José Mourinho after completing his first training session with the Spanish giants.
The Spain international, who recently arrived at the Santiago Bernabéu after leaving Chelsea, spoke to Real Madrid TV about his first impressions of the club and his relationship with Mourinho.
His assessment was overwhelmingly positive.
Cucurella described the atmosphere around the team as one of confidence and naturalness, while making it clear that the ultimate objective is straightforward: Real Madrid want to win and enjoy what could be an important season.
Cucurella’s First Impression of Mourinho
The first meeting between a new signing and his manager can often provide an early indication of how a relationship might develop.
For Cucurella, his first experience of working under Mourinho has been encouraging.
Asked about his feelings towards the Portuguese coach, the defender highlighted the confidence and ease around the group.
He also stressed the importance of translating that positive atmosphere into performances on the pitch.
That is where Mourinho's influence will ultimately be judged.
Cucurella's comments do not amount to a prediction of trophies, but they do reveal that the early environment inside the squad is giving him confidence.
Why the Defender Is So Excited
Cucurella's arrival at Madrid represents a major change in his career.
Having developed at Barcelona's La Masia academy before establishing himself elsewhere in Spain and then spending four years in the Premier League, the defender has now returned to Spain to play for one of the world's biggest clubs.
His excitement was obvious when discussing the opportunity.
Cucurella described Real Madrid as the biggest club in Europe and said he had no hesitation when the opportunity to join arrived.
The defender also spoke about watching the club's famous Champions League nights as a spectator and now having the opportunity to experience them from inside the team.
That change in perspective is one of the biggest adjustments he will face.
A New Challenge at the Bernabéu
Cucurella has already experienced the Santiago Bernabéu as an opposition player.
Now, he will have the opportunity to walk into the stadium wearing the famous white shirt.
The defender said he is particularly looking forward to experiencing his first home match and meeting the supporters.
That anticipation reflects the significance of the move.
This is not simply another transfer for Cucurella.
It is an opportunity to establish himself at the highest level of Spanish football while competing for major honours with a club that expects success every season.
Mourinho’s Madrid Have Plenty to Prove
The optimism surrounding Cucurella comes at an important time for Real Madrid.
Mourinho has returned to the club after more than a decade away, taking charge again following a disappointing previous campaign for Madrid.
The club have also been active in reshaping the squad.
Cucurella is among a group of significant arrivals, with Real Madrid also strengthening in other areas as Mourinho prepares his team for the 2026/27 campaign.
Reuters has reported the arrival of several major additions following the Portuguese manager's return.
That makes the coming season particularly intriguing.
There is a new manager, a revamped squad and considerable pressure to compete for the biggest trophies.
Cucurella Understands the Expectation
The left-back is not underestimating what it means to represent Real Madrid.
He acknowledged the club's history and the responsibility that comes with wearing the shirt.
That understanding will be important.
Real Madrid do not measure success simply by performances or improvement. The expectation is to challenge for and win major trophies.
Cucurella's comments therefore provide an insight into his mindset as he begins his Madrid career.
He is excited by the opportunity, but he also understands the demands attached to it.

Positive words during pre-season are only the beginning.
Cucurella now has to translate his enthusiasm into performances.
The defender will have to compete for his place, adapt to Mourinho's tactical demands and build relationships with his new teammates.
The manager will also need to find the right balance within a squad containing several new faces.
That process will take time.
But Cucurella's first impressions suggest he has arrived with the right mentality.
What Cucurella’s Comments Really Mean
The most significant aspect of Cucurella's comments is not that he expects Real Madrid to have a "great year".
It is the confidence behind those words.
The defender has already experienced his first training session, met his teammates and begun working under Mourinho.
His early assessment is that the environment is positive and that the squad is united around the objective of winning.
Whether that translates into silverware remains impossible to know at this stage.
But for Mourinho, having new signings arrive with confidence in the project can only help as he attempts to establish his second Real Madrid era.
What Comes Next?
Cucurella's attention will now turn towards becoming fully integrated into the squad and preparing for the start of competitive football.
Real Madrid's LaLiga campaign is scheduled to begin away to Espanyol on 22 August, giving Mourinho and his players limited time to prepare.
For Cucurella, the next milestone will be making his competitive debut in the famous white shirt.
His first words have created optimism.
Now the performances have to follow.
