José Mourinho has questioned the refereeing decision that allowed Kylian Mbappé’s late penalty miss to stand during Real Madrid’s 1-0 defeat to Real Betis.
The dramatic incident came deep into stoppage time at La Cartuja, with Real Madrid chasing an equaliser after Troy Parrott had given Betis the lead in the 81st minute. Mbappé stepped up from the spot, but Álvaro Valles saved the penalty to preserve the hosts’ advantage.
Why Wasn’t the Penalty Retaken?
The controversy centred on Betis defender Marc Bartra, who appeared to move into the penalty area before Mbappé struck the ball.
Real Madrid players and supporters questioned why the penalty was not ordered to be retaken, particularly because Bartra subsequently helped clear the rebound after Valles made the save.
However, the situation is more complicated than simply asking whether a defender crossed the line.
Under IFAB Law 14, defensive encroachment only requires a retake when it has an impact on the outcome. In this case, reports indicate Bartra was airborne when Mbappé made contact with the ball, with his feet not yet grounded inside the penalty area.
Mourinho Left Frustrated
Mourinho was already unhappy after seeing his team dominate large portions of the match without finding a goal.
Real Madrid hit the woodwork and created several opportunities before Mbappé's late penalty offered one final route back into the contest. The French forward's miss ultimately condemned Madrid to their first defeat of the season.
The Real Madrid manager also criticised what he viewed as inconsistent refereeing and questioned why certain decisions went against his team.
A Controversial Ending
The penalty debate has added another talking point to an already dramatic defeat.
For Betis, Valles' save and the subsequent defensive clearance preserved a huge victory. For Mourinho and Madrid, however, the feeling will be that several small moments went against them on a night when they created enough chances to leave Seville with something.
The defeat ended Mourinho's perfect start back at Real Madrid, but the penalty controversy could continue to dominate discussion well beyond the final whistle.
