His arrival gives Al-Shabab an experienced defensive midfielder with extensive experience at the highest level of European football.

From Arsenal to Villarreal β€” and now Al-Shabab

Partey left Arsenal in 2025 after making 130 appearances and scoring nine goals for the north London club. He subsequently joined Villarreal on a free transfer and spent the 2025/26 campaign in La Liga.

He made 32 appearances for Villarreal last season, according to Reuters, before the Spanish club opted not to renew his contract.

Now Al-Shabab have moved to secure his services without paying a transfer fee.

The Ghanaian's biggest value could be his experience.

Partey has played in major European competitions, competed for trophies in Spain and England and spent five seasons at Arsenal.

Al-Shabab are hoping that experience can strengthen their midfield as they look to improve their performances in Saudi Arabia.

The club are also working under a new manager, Thomas Letsch, making Partey's arrival part of a broader squad rebuild.

A fresh challenge at 33

For Partey, the move represents a significant change after more than a decade in European football.

His next challenge will be adapting to the Saudi Pro League while continuing to compete at international level with Ghana.

The move also gives him the opportunity to bring his experience to a new league at a stage of his career when leadership and game management can become just as important as athleticism.

From Madrid to London, Villarreal and now Riyadh β€” Thomas Partey's European chapter is over, and a new Saudi adventure has begun.
