Michael Carrick and Bruno Fernandes have held face-to-face talks at Manchester United’s Carrington training ground in an attempt to resolve tensions following a public disagreement over the team’s tactics.

The meeting, held on Tuesday, October 27, came after United captain Fernandes was left on the bench throughout the club’s disappointing 3-0 Premier League defeat to Bournemouth. The discussions are intended to help both men move forward as United attempt to rescue their struggling campaign.

Fernandes’ Criticism Sparked Tensions

The disagreement followed United’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como, after which Fernandes appeared to question Carrick’s tactical approach, particularly the team’s decision not to press opponents man-to-man.

His comments attracted attention because of his position as club captain and his importance to United’s midfield.

Carrick subsequently dropped Fernandes for the Bournemouth fixture, explaining that the selection decision was made on footballing grounds.

“Picking the team is always a difficult decision,” Carrick said, insisting that he had to make choices he believed would produce the right performance for the team.

Positive Meeting Offers Hope

According to Sky Sports, the pair held an open and frank discussion, with Carrick satisfied that the tension between them had eased. It remains unclear whether Fernandes formally apologised for his public criticism.

The conversation also followed a wider squad meeting in which players and staff acknowledged that performances had fallen below expectations.

United have endured a difficult opening to the campaign, increasing pressure on Carrick and raising questions about the team’s direction.

Fernandes Could Return Against Chelsea

The talks could have an immediate impact on United’s team selection. Fernandes is expected to be available for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, although his involvement in the starting line-up is not guaranteed.

His return would offer Carrick an experienced playmaker capable of creating chances and helping United regain control in midfield.

However, the Portuguese international must also rediscover his best form after a difficult spell, while the entire squad faces pressure to deliver a stronger performance.

Carrick Needs Results to Ease Pressure

Manchester United’s problems extend beyond the relationship between their manager and captain. Recent defeats have intensified scrutiny of the team’s performances, while supporters are demanding greater consistency.

The meeting represents a possible step towards restoring unity, but positive conversations alone will not solve the club’s problems.

For Carrick and Fernandes, the priority is now to put their differences aside and focus on results. Saturday’s clash with Chelsea offers United an opportunity to show whether the discussions have helped bring greater clarity and togetherness to the squad.
