Parma have moved quickly to find Carlos Cuesta's successor, reaching an agreement with Alberto Gilardino to take over as the club's new head coach.
The former Italy striker is set to replace Cuesta after the Spaniard's departure from Parma was agreed following differences over the development of the club's sporting project.
Gilardino's arrival would mark a major change in profile for Parma: from one of Serie A's youngest coaches to a former Parma player with experience managing in Italy's top two divisions.
From Parma Hero to Parma Head Coach
Gilardino's return carries an obvious connection to the club.
The former striker spent three seasons with Parma as a player between 2002 and 2005, establishing himself as one of the most important young forwards in Italian football during that period.
More than two decades later, he is now set to return to the club in a completely different role.
This time, Gilardino will be responsible for leading Parma from the touchline and guiding a squad competing in Serie A.
A Very Different Choice From Cuesta
The decision to bring in Gilardino represents a clear change in coaching experience.
Cuesta arrived at Parma in 2025 without previous experience as a senior first-team head coach, having worked as part of Mikel Arteta's coaching staff at Arsenal.
He subsequently guided Parma to a comfortable Serie A survival campaign last season, finishing 13th with 45 points.
However, the relationship eventually broke down.
Parma officially announced on September 27 that Cuesta was leaving by mutual agreement after an internal discussion between the club and coach concluded that the conditions were no longer there to continue working together, particularly regarding the development of the sporting project.
The timing was particularly striking because Cuesta had just guided Parma to their first league victory of the season, a 2-1 win over Genoa.
Why Gilardino's Experience Matters
Gilardino brings a very different background.
After moving into coaching, he guided Genoa to promotion to Serie A and subsequently kept the club in the Italian top flight.
His coaching career has also included a spell at Pisa before Parma emerged as his next opportunity.
That experience in Italian football is likely to be important as Parma look to establish themselves in Serie A.
The club currently have a young squad and are looking for stability after making another change in the dugout.
Gilardino therefore arrives with knowledge of the league, experience of working with developing players and, perhaps most importantly, an understanding of what Parma represents.
Parma did not take long to identify their preferred replacement.
After Cuesta's departure was announced, several names were linked with the vacancy, including Roberto D'Aversa and other experienced Italian coaches.
Gilardino quickly emerged as the leading option.
Reports from Italy now indicate that Parma have reached an agreement with the former Pisa coach, with the remaining formalities being completed before the appointment is officially announced.
The club had initially planned for its existing technical staff to oversee training while a new head coach was selected.
That temporary arrangement now looks set to be short-lived.
A New Era Begins at Parma
Gilardino's appointment would give Parma a coach who already understands the club from the inside.
But the challenge awaiting him is very different from the one he faced as a player.
He will inherit a Parma side that needs consistency in Serie A and must quickly adapt to another change in tactical leadership.
The immediate priority will be to establish his ideas, assess the squad and build on the work already done while creating his own identity.
For Parma supporters, however, there is an additional storyline: one of the club's former attacking stars is now preparing to walk back into the Ennio Tardini as the man in charge.
Alberto Gilardino is returning to Parma — this time, with the future of the team in his hands.
