Olise Leads Bayern’s Charge as Champions Send Early Warning With Stuttgart Rout

Bayern Munich have wasted no time reminding the Bundesliga of their ambitions, opening their title defence with a commanding 5-1 victory over VfB Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena.

Vincent Kompany's side had to withstand an energetic start from Stuttgart before eventually overwhelming their visitors, with Michael Olise standing out as Bayern turned a competitive contest into a convincing victory after half-time.

Upamecano breaks the deadlock

Stuttgart were fearless during the opening stages and came close to taking the lead when Tiago Tomás struck the crossbar.

Bayern gradually began to impose themselves, with Olise also hitting the woodwork before the breakthrough arrived in the 21st minute.

Joshua Kimmich delivered a dangerous corner towards the near post, where Dayot Upamecano flicked the ball beyond Fabian Bredlow to give the champions the lead.

Bayern could have added to their advantage before the interval, but Bredlow produced several important saves to keep Stuttgart within touching distance.

Stuttgart suddenly level

The visitors came out strongly after the break and stunned Bayern by drawing level in the 52nd minute.

Josha Vagnoman finished the move to make it 1-1, giving Stuttgart renewed belief and briefly putting the champions under pressure.

But Bayern's response was immediate.

Olise changes everything

Just three minutes after the equaliser, Olise restored Bayern's advantage.

Kimmich found the French winger with an excellent pass, and Olise kept his composure to beat Bredlow and put the hosts back in front.

Stuttgart's hopes then disappeared just two minutes later.

Vagnoman attempted to deal with an Alphonso Davies cross but ended up putting the ball into his own net, giving Bayern a 3-1 advantage in a devastating spell.

Olise thought he had added another shortly afterwards, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

Bayern finish the job

Stuttgart were unable to recover as Bayern continued to create opportunities.

Aleksandar Pavlović eventually made it 4-1 in the 82nd minute after substitute Ismael Saibari produced the assist.

Saibari then turned provider again in stoppage time, setting up Luis Díaz to complete the rout with his first Bundesliga goal for Bayern.

Five different goalscorers contributed to the victory, underlining the attacking depth available to Kompany.

A statement from the champions

The scoreline was emphatic, but Kompany was keen to stress that the Bundesliga title will not be won on the opening weekend.

The Bayern boss acknowledged that Stuttgart made life difficult, particularly early on, but praised his players for remaining calm and eventually taking control of the contest.

For Bayern, it is nevertheless an ideal start to their title defence.

They have immediately shown that the attacking threat which helped them dominate last season has not disappeared, while players such as Olise and Díaz have already given supporters plenty of reasons for optimism.

Stuttgart, meanwhile, will be left frustrated after competing well for long periods before being punished ruthlessly once Bayern found another gear.

The Bundesliga champions have made their opening statement — and the rest of Germany has already been given a reminder of the challenge facing anyone hoping to take Bayern's crown.
