Njoku, Nwosu, Emmanwori and More: 10 NFL Players of Nigerian Origin to Watch in 2026

The 2026 NFL season has already provided another reminder of Nigeria's growing influence on American football.

After the Seattle Seahawks' Super Bowl LX triumph, which featured six players of Nigerian heritage on the championship roster, attention has now turned to the new campaign. Several of those players remain important figures, while others around the league are beginning the season with major expectations.

Here are 10 NFL players of Nigerian origin to watch during the 2026 season.

1. Jaxon Smith-Njigba – Seattle Seahawks

Smith-Njigba enters the season as one of the biggest names on this list.

The Seattle wide receiver enjoyed an extraordinary 2025 campaign, finishing with 119 receptions, 1,793 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. He also opened the 2026 regular season with eight catches for 122 yards and a touchdown in Seattle's 13–10 victory over New England.

With quarterback uncertainty following Sam Darnold's injury, Smith-Njigba's ability to create production could become even more important.

2. Nick Emmanwori – Seattle Seahawks

Emmanwori is entering his second NFL season after an impressive rookie campaign.

The safety recorded 81 tackles, 11 passes defended, 2.5 sacks and an interception in 2025 while starting 11 games. His versatility allowed Seattle to use him around the defensive formation.

He is already being viewed as an important piece of Mike Macdonald's defence, and his second season could be another significant step forward.

3. Uchenna Nwosu – Seattle Seahawks

Nwosu's story became one of the defining Nigerian moments of Super Bowl LX after he returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown.

The veteran linebacker has battled injuries during his career, but he remains an experienced presence on Seattle's defence. NBC Sports recently highlighted his Nigerian heritage and the importance of his family background to his journey.

4. Boye Mafe – Cincinnati Bengals

Mafe begins a new chapter in 2026 after moving from Seattle to Cincinnati.

The linebacker recorded 21 career sacks through his first four seasons, including 17 during his first three campaigns with the Seahawks. NFL's current statistics list him with the Bengals, where he opened the 2026 season with a sack against Tampa Bay.

That move makes Mafe one of the more intriguing Nigerian-heritage players to follow this year.

5. David Njoku – Los Angeles Chargers

Njoku has entered a new phase of his career after nine seasons with Cleveland.

The veteran tight end joined the Los Angeles Chargers in 2026 after announcing that he would leave the Browns. He immediately made an impact in his first game, catching five passes for 58 yards against Arizona.

For a player with more than 4,000 career receiving yards, there is plenty of experience for the Chargers to utilise.

6. Quinshon Judkins – Cleveland Browns

Judkins represents the younger generation of Nigerian-American NFL talent.

The Cleveland running back produced 827 rushing yards and seven touchdowns as a rookie in 2025 and remains the Browns' leading running-back option entering 2026.

His first game of the new season was difficult, with 33 rushing yards and 17 receiving yards against Jacksonville, but the season is a long one.

7. Michael Onwenu – New England Patriots

Onwenu has quietly established himself as one of the more dependable offensive linemen with Nigerian heritage.

The Patriots guard/tackle started all 17 games in 2025 and remains an important part of New England's offensive line. He was also among the Nigerian-heritage players involved in Super Bowl LX.

For offensive linemen, statistics rarely tell the whole story. Onwenu's value is often measured by the problems he prevents rather than the highlights he creates.

8. Jalen Milroe – Seattle Seahawks

Milroe is one of the most fascinating young players on the list.

The former Alabama quarterback was drafted by Seattle in 2025 and enters his second professional season behind the established quarterback options. NFL lists him as an active member of the Seahawks' roster in 2026.

His athleticism and dual-threat ability give Seattle another intriguing option whenever his number is called.

9. Olu Oluwatimi – Seattle Seahawks

Oluwatimi does not receive the same attention as the skill-position stars, but his role is crucial.

The centre was part of Seattle's Super Bowl-winning Nigerian contingent and has continued to develop as an interior offensive lineman. His responsibilities include helping organise protection and keeping the offence operating smoothly.

For a quarterback, having a centre who knows what is coming before the snap can be worth its weight in gold.

10. Chimere Dike – Tennessee Titans

Dike is another young player worth following closely.

The Tennessee wide receiver and return specialist entered the NFL in 2025 and immediately showed his versatility. His rookie campaign included 48 receptions for 423 yards and four touchdowns, while his special-teams contributions made him particularly valuable.

With another offseason of NFL experience behind him, Dike will look to establish himself as an even bigger part of Tennessee's plans.

Nigeria's NFL Influence Continues to Grow

The Nigerian connection in the NFL is no longer a novelty.

Six players of Nigerian heritage were part of Seattle's Super Bowl-winning team in February, while players such as Njoku, Judkins and Onwenu have continued the representation elsewhere around the league.

The 2026 season therefore offers another opportunity to watch that influence develop — from established veterans such as Njoku and Nwosu to emerging stars including Emmanwori, Judkins and Dike.
