NPFL Matchday 1: 19 Goals, Comebacks and Early Shocks as New Season Bursts Into Life

The 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League season wasted little time delivering drama.

From Shooting Stars edging newly promoted Inter Lagos in the opening fixture to defending champions Rangers International being held at home, the first round produced 19 goals across 10 matches, several comebacks and early warning signs for some of the league's biggest clubs.

Ikorodu City, Barau FC and Doma United were among the strongest winners, while Enyimba suffered an early setback and Kano Pillars surrendered a two-goal advantage against Kwara United.

The weekend also produced one unusual finish, with heavy rain forcing Abia Warriors and Kun Khalifat to complete their match on Monday morning.

Shooting Stars 2–1 Inter Lagos: 3SC Set the Tone

The 2026/27 campaign began at the Lekan Salami Stadium with Shooting Stars securing a 2–1 victory over newly promoted Inter Lagos.

Lucky Gyang Emmanuel gave the hosts the perfect start after 15 minutes, firing 3SC into the lead.

Inter Lagos responded quickly. Captain Uchenna Njoku tapped home from close range seven minutes later to bring the visitors level.

Shooting Stars restored their advantage just before half-time when Sodiq Ibrahim converted from the penalty spot after Emmanuel had won a penalty following a challenge from Jamiu Arowolo.

Inter Lagos pushed for another equaliser after the interval but could not find it.

There was late drama when Shooting Stars were awarded another penalty, only for substitute Mustapha Adams Agba'a to strike the post.

The Oluyole Warriors nevertheless held on for three points and their first opening-day NPFL victory in three seasons.

Rangers 1–1 Katsina United: Champions Escape Opening-Day Defeat

Rangers International began their title defence under pressure after Katsina United came close to producing one of the weekend's biggest surprises.

Playing at their temporary home at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, the champions fell behind in the 38th minute.

Luis Dadong took advantage of a defensive error after Lucky Jimoh mistimed his clearance, allowing the Katsina United forward to finish into an empty net.

Rangers struggled to find an equaliser for long periods, with Katsina United defending their advantage effectively.

But the champions eventually found a way back.

A seemingly harmless free-kick from Rangers right-back Chibueze Oputa caused a major error from Katsina United goalkeeper Francis Koroma, allowing the ball to find the net in the closing stages.

The late equaliser rescued a point for Rangers but ensured their title defence began with a warning rather than a statement.

Ikorodu City 3–1 Ranchers Bees: Oga Boys Complete Stunning Comeback

Ikorodu City delivered one of Matchday 1's most impressive performances after recovering from an early deficit to beat newly promoted Ranchers Bees 3–1 in Lagos.

Ranchers Bees stunned the home crowd after just seven minutes when Chiedozie Jude Okorie capitalised on an error to put the visitors ahead.

Ikorodu City responded before the half-hour mark.

Umar Dan'Azumi equalised in the 30th minute before Abayomi Ayodeji completed the turnaround deep into first-half stoppage time.

The Oga Boys then added a third late in the match.

Farouk Salami converted an 87th-minute penalty to complete the 3–1 victory.

Ranchers Bees' afternoon became even more difficult when they finished the match with 10 men.

The comeback immediately placed Ikorodu City among the early pace-setters in the new campaign.

Barau FC 3–1 Nasarawa United: New Boys Make Their Mark

Barau FC announced themselves emphatically with a 3–1 victory over Nasarawa United.

Joseph Atule opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Abubakar Abdullahi restored parity for Nasarawa United.

The hosts eventually regained control.

Al'Amin Umar put Barau back in front in the 78th minute before Sugau Aliyu added a third four minutes later.

Barau could have scored another when they were awarded a penalty, but Nasarawa goalkeeper Chinemerem Olughu saved Atule's spot-kick.

The missed penalty ultimately mattered little as Barau secured all three points and one of the weekend's biggest winning margins.

Bendel Insurance 2–1 Warri Wolves: Insurance Win Old Bendel Derby

Bendel Insurance had to come from behind to claim bragging rights against Warri Wolves in a fiercely contested South-South derby.

Warri Wolves struck early through Eventus Itolowo, who punished a defensive mistake to put the visitors ahead.

Insurance responded strongly.

Kayode Oke levelled from the penalty spot in the 20th minute before Alex Oweilayefa completed the comeback shortly after half-time.

The 2–1 victory gave Bendel Insurance three points while leaving Warri Wolves to rue their failure to protect an early advantage.

Rivers United 2–0 Plateau United: Finidi's Side Make Strong Start

Rivers United opened their campaign with a convincing 2–0 victory over Plateau United in Port Harcourt.

The Pride of Rivers wasted little time taking control.

Abdulrasheed Shehu Dabai opened the scoring early after Chijioke Mbaoma's effort was saved and the rebound fell kindly for the Rivers United forward.

The hosts continued to apply pressure and doubled their advantage through Wasiu Falolu before half-time.

Plateau United could not find a route back into the contest after the interval.

The result gave Finidi George's side a clean sheet and three points from their opening fixture, immediately strengthening their credentials as one of the teams to watch this season.

Doma United 2–0 Sporting Lagos: Savannah Tigers Win Promoted Clash

The battle between two promoted sides went decisively in Doma United's favour.

Sadiq Rilwan gave Doma United the lead early in the contest before Sporting Lagos suffered another blow when defender Abraham Idakwo was sent off for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Despite playing with 10 men, Sporting Lagos attempted to stay in the contest.

Doma United eventually made their numerical advantage count.

Daniel Simon added the second goal in the 75th minute to secure a 2–0 victory.

The Savannah Tigers therefore began their return to the top flight with maximum points, while Sporting Lagos were left to reflect on a difficult afternoon.

Niger Tornadoes 2–1 Enyimba: Nine-Time Champions Stunned

Enyimba's opening weekend could hardly have gone according to plan.

The nine-time champions travelled to Minna but returned empty-handed after Niger Tornadoes secured a 2–1 victory.

Aliyu Goyi broke the deadlock in the 40th minute, giving the hosts a 1–0 lead at the interval.

Enyimba responded after the restart.

Wonah Williams restored parity in the 71st minute, giving the visitors renewed hope of taking something from the match.

But Tornadoes refused to settle for a point.

Michael Olalusi struck seven minutes from full-time to restore the home side's advantage and seal all three points.

For Enyimba, the result represents an early setback in a season in which they will be expected to compete near the top end of the table.

Kwara United 2–2 Kano Pillars: Jerry Rescues Point From Two Goals Down

One of the weekend's most dramatic matches unfolded in Ilorin.

Kano Pillars appeared to be cruising after Shola Abdulraheem opened the scoring and veteran Rabiu Ali doubled the advantage before the half-hour mark.

Kwara United, however, refused to collapse.

Alex Jerry pulled one back shortly after half-time before completing his brace deep into stoppage time.

The late equaliser rescued a point for Kwara United and denied Kano Pillars what would have been a major away victory.

For Pillars, surrendering a two-goal lead will be the biggest frustration from the opening weekend.

Abia Warriors 0–0 Kun Khalifat: Rain Forces Unusual Finish

The final Matchday 1 fixture was the only game that could not be completed on Sunday.

Abia Warriors and Kun Khalifat were locked at 0–0 when heavy rainfall made the pitch unplayable, forcing the match to be suspended with 17 minutes remaining.

The outstanding portion was completed on Monday morning.

Despite Abia Warriors pushing for a winner, Kun Khalifat goalkeeper Obinna Akuchie produced several important saves to preserve a point for the visitors.

Neither side could find a breakthrough during the resumption, meaning both clubs began the campaign with a goalless draw.

What Matchday 1 Told Us About the New NPFL Season

The opening round immediately produced several storylines worth following.

Ikorodu City made the strongest statement among the winners, recovering from an early setback to defeat Ranchers Bees 3–1.

Barau FC also began impressively with a 3–1 victory over Nasarawa United, while Doma United marked their return to the top flight with a 2–0 win.

Rivers United looked equally convincing, defeating Plateau United 2–0 without conceding.

At the other end, Enyimba's defeat to Niger Tornadoes and Rangers' late escape against Katsina United demonstrated that reputation will not guarantee points this season.

Kano Pillars will also be wondering how a two-goal advantage disappeared against Kwara United.

And with 19 goals scored across the opening round, the new NPFL campaign has already provided plenty of evidence that the 2026/27 season could be difficult to predict.
