OFFICIAL: Bruno Fernandes Wins Premier League Player of the Matchweek After Ipswich Masterclass

Bruno Fernandes has been named the Premier League’s Player of the Matchweek for Matchweek 2 after producing a sensational performance in Manchester United’s 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town.


The Manchester United captain was at the heart of everything during Sunday’s emphatic win, scoring a hat-trick before turning provider for Bryan Mbeumo.

Fernandes’ performance proved too strong for the competition, with the Portuguese midfielder receiving 69 per cent of the supporters’ vote to claim the award.

The 31-year-old comfortably finished ahead of the other nominees, including Rayan Cherki, Morgan Gibbs-White, Nico González, Erling Haaland, João Pedro and Konstantinos Tzolakis.


His hat-trick was the headline act.

Fernandes opened his account with a powerful near-post finish before calmly converting from the penalty spot. He completed his treble after reacting quickest to a deflected effort, then added an assist with a perfectly weighted pass for Mbeumo.

It was a complete captain’s performance as United secured their second Premier League victory of the campaign.

Another award for the United captain

The latest honour continues Fernandes’ remarkable relationship with the Player of the Matchweek award.


He won the award six times last season, more than any other player, and has immediately added another to his collection at the beginning of the new campaign.

Matchweek 1’s award went to Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, but Fernandes has now taken centre stage after a performance that underlined his importance to Manchester United.

With the season still in its early stages, the Portuguese star has already delivered a major statement.
