Michael Carrick has delivered an encouraging update on Marcus Rashford, revealing that the Manchester United forward has returned to training in particularly impressive condition ahead of the club's Premier League opener against Hull City.
Rashford has returned to United following loan spells at Barcelona and Aston Villa, and his future at Old Trafford has been a major talking point during the summer.
But Carrick's latest comments suggest the 28-year-old is fully focused on making an impact for his boyhood club.
Carrick impressed by Rashford's return
Rashford was among the later players to return to United's pre-season preparations, but Carrick says the forward has quickly looked ready for the demands ahead.
Speaking ahead of the opening fixture, the United manager said:
"“Marcus has come back particularly bright, particularly sharp, as I've said, and looks really good.”"
Carrick also stressed that the modern football calendar means players do not necessarily lose much fitness during a relatively short break.
However, he emphasised the importance of managing Rashford's workload carefully as the season progresses.
A fresh opportunity for Rashford
The new campaign represents an important opportunity for Rashford.
After spending last season away from Old Trafford, he is now back in a Manchester United squad led by Carrick, who knows the player well.
Carrick has previously spoken positively about Rashford's return, making it clear that he believes the forward can still make a significant contribution to United.
The challenge now is turning that positive start in training into consistent performances when competitive football begins.
United hand Rashford the No.9 shirt
Rashford has also been handed the No.9 shirt for the new season, adding another interesting element to his return.
The number became available following Rasmus Højlund's departure, while new signing Benjamin Šeško will continue wearing No.30.
It represents a significant change for Rashford, who wore No.14 during his loan spell at Barcelona and No.9 at Aston Villa.
More importantly, though, his performances will determine whether this second chapter at United becomes a success.
Hull City provide the first test
United's opening Premier League assignment is against newly promoted Hull City at the MKM Stadium.
Rashford could therefore make his first competitive appearance for Manchester United since December 2024, giving the fixture an additional storyline.

There is also an interesting piece of history between Rashford and the venue.
The last time United won at Hull in August 2016, Rashford scored a dramatic late winner.
Almost a decade later, he returns to the same opponent looking to begin another chapter in his United career.
Carrick wants patience
While the excitement surrounding Rashford's return is understandable, Carrick has made it clear that managing the squad over an entire season is more important than rushing players at the beginning.
For Rashford, that could mean building his minutes gradually while continuing to regain his rhythm.
But the early signs have certainly encouraged Carrick.
Rashford has returned to Manchester United with something to prove, and his manager already likes what he is seeing.
The first opportunity to turn that training-ground sharpness into competitive impact arrives against Hull.
