Former Premier League striker Charlie Austin has questioned whether Roberto De Zerbi has shown enough in his managerial career to convince Tottenham supporters that he can turn around the club’s disastrous start to the 2026/27 Premier League season.

Austin’s comments came after Spurs suffered a 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa, leaving them without a league victory after their opening five matches and facing growing pressure during the international break.

Austin Questions De Zerbi’s Credentials

Tottenham’s difficult start has prompted questions over both the squad and the manager, with Charlie Austin now openly challenging whether De Zerbi has the track record to lead Spurs out of trouble.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Austin questioned what De Zerbi had achieved in his managerial career to justify confidence that he could transform Tottenham’s fortunes.

Austin’s criticism followed comments from broadcaster Ade Oladipo, who described De Zerbi as a volatile figure and expressed doubts about whether the Italian could remain in charge long enough to turn the situation around.

Austin went further by questioning whether Tottenham supporters could genuinely point to evidence from De Zerbi’s previous clubs that suggested he was capable of fixing the current problems.

“There’s no proof in the pudding,” was the essence of Austin’s argument as he challenged the belief surrounding the Spurs head coach.

Tottenham’s Nightmare Start

The pressure surrounding De Zerbi has been building since the opening weeks of the campaign.

Tottenham began their Premier League season with a 3-0 defeat at Brentford before losing 2-0 at home to Newcastle United.

Back-to-back goalless draws against Nottingham Forest and Everton followed, leaving Spurs still searching for their first league victory.

The situation then worsened against Aston Villa.

Tottenham took the lead but eventually suffered a 3-2 defeat at home, extending their winless league run and leaving them near the bottom of the table.

De Zerbi himself has repeatedly acknowledged the problems facing his side.

Earlier in the season, he admitted that finding the “right mentality” was one of his biggest challenges, while after the Villa defeat he described Tottenham as fragile.

The £300m Question

The scale of Tottenham’s summer investment has made the poor start even more difficult to explain.

Spurs spent more than £300 million during the summer transfer window as De Zerbi and the club attempted to rebuild the squad.

The spending included major additions such as Sandro Tonali, Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke and Mateus Fernandes, while Manchester City winger Savinho also arrived later in the window.

Despite the investment, Tottenham have struggled to translate their new-look squad into Premier League results.

Reuters reported that the club's summer spending reached around £322 million, adding further weight to the expectations surrounding De Zerbi's team.

Austin Also Questions the Players

Austin's criticism was not directed exclusively at the manager.

The former striker also questioned whether Tottenham have enough players showing the level of commitment required to fight their way out of the situation.

He pointed towards Newcastle as an example of a side that showed greater determination against Spurs and challenged Tottenham to identify the players in their dressing room who would be willing to fight through difficult moments for De Zerbi.

That concern reflects an issue the Tottenham manager has already highlighted himself.

After the defeat to Brentford, De Zerbi said his team were not yet functioning as a team and criticised their physical condition and lack of fight.

He later identified mentality as a major challenge following the Newcastle defeat.

De Zerbi Has Already Survived One Crisis

There is another side to the story.

De Zerbi only arrived at Tottenham late last season, taking charge with seven matches remaining and helping the club avoid relegation.

Tottenham finished 17th after taking 11 points from those seven matches, giving the Italian a platform to oversee a major rebuild during the summer.

The club therefore backed him heavily in the transfer market, with De Zerbi publicly stating during pre-season that he wanted to build a Tottenham capable of competing near the top of the Premier League.

The problem now is that the early results have fallen dramatically short of those ambitions.

Manchester United Awaits Tottenham

Tottenham's next Premier League match could hardly come at a more important time.

Spurs are scheduled to travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on October 10, with De Zerbi needing his side to respond after the international break.

The fixture gives Tottenham an immediate opportunity to change the mood around the club, but another poor performance would inevitably intensify the scrutiny surrounding the manager.

Austin has already made his position clear: Tottenham supporters need to see evidence that De Zerbi can turn the situation around.

The next few matches may provide the answer.
