Leeds United have suffered a significant defensive setback after Joe Rodon was ruled out for up to 10 weeks with a serious hamstring injury.

The Wales international was forced off during Leeds’ 1-1 Premier League draw with Brentford last weekend, and manager Daniel Farke has now confirmed the severity of the problem.

Rodon faces an estimated eight to 10 weeks on the sidelines, meaning Leeds will have to cope without one of their most important defenders for a substantial part of the opening months of the season.

Farke described the injury as a “big blow” given Rodon’s importance to his team.

Rodon started Leeds’ first two Premier League matches of the campaign but lasted just 34 minutes against Brentford before being replaced.

Initial fears that the centre-back could face an extended absence have now been confirmed.

Speaking ahead of Leeds’ trip to Brighton & Hove Albion, Farke revealed that Rodon has suffered a serious hamstring problem.

The Leeds boss explained that the defender will definitely miss the next international break and is also likely to miss the first matches after it.

That places his potential return towards the beginning of November, although the exact recovery time will depend on how his rehabilitation progresses.

For Leeds, the timing could hardly be worse.

Rodon had established himself as a key member of Farke’s defence after playing a major role in the club's return to the Premier League last season.

A Key Defender Leeds Cannot Easily Replace

The 28-year-old has become increasingly important to Farke since arriving at Elland Road.

Rodon initially joined Leeds on loan before making the move permanent, and his importance was underlined by the club handing him a new contract running until 2030 only last month.

Last season, Rodon made 38 appearances in all competitions as Leeds adjusted to life back in the Premier League.

His reliability was particularly evident during Leeds’ promotion campaign, when he started all 46 league matches and played almost every minute as the club won the Championship title.

Losing that experience for potentially two months therefore leaves Farke with an immediate selection problem.

Rodon was also one of the defenders trusted to provide stability at the heart of the team, making his absence particularly significant while Leeds continue adapting to the demands of top-flight football.

Nico Elvedi Set for Bigger Role

Nico Elvedi is now among the players expected to shoulder more responsibility in Rodon’s absence.

The Switzerland international replaced Rodon during the Brentford match, and Farke has previously praised his contribution.

James Justin could also be required to play a greater role centrally, with Farke admitting that Rodon’s injury increases the pressure on the squad’s defensive options.

The timing is especially notable because Leeds were already working with limited senior centre-back options.

Farke therefore faces the challenge of maintaining defensive balance without one of his most established players.

Leeds Must Navigate a Difficult Spell Without Rodon

Leeds began the Premier League campaign positively, beating Nottingham Forest before drawing with Brentford.

However, Rodon’s injury changes the complexion of the next stage of their season.

The club face Brighton away next, before a run of fixtures in which squad depth will be tested.

The eight-to-10-week estimate could keep Rodon out of a sizeable number of Premier League matches, depending on his recovery and whether there are any setbacks.

It is also a blow for Wales, with Rodon set to miss the upcoming international period and potentially further fixtures if his recovery takes towards the longer end of the projected timeframe.

For Leeds, however, the immediate priority is clear: find a way to replace a defender Farke regards as a key player.

The club strengthened in other areas before the transfer window closed, but Rodon’s injury now leaves the manager facing an unexpected defensive headache.

With the defender potentially unavailable until November, Leeds will need their remaining centre-backs to step up quickly.
