Leeds United delivered one of their most impressive performances of the young Premier League season on Monday night, sweeping aside Newcastle United 4-1 at Elland Road to extend their unbeaten start and climb to third in the table.
Daniel Farke’s side produced a ruthless first-half display, scoring three times before the break before adding another shortly after half-time.
Newcastle could only manage a late consolation as their unbeaten beginning to the campaign came crashing down.
Leeds Strike Twice in Two Minutes
The breakthrough arrived in the 32nd minute when Lewis Miley turned the ball into his own net, giving Leeds the lead.
Just two minutes later, Jayden Bogle doubled the advantage, heading home from a dangerous delivery with Newcastle struggling to cope with Leeds' attacking pressure.
The home side continued to control the contest, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin made it 3-0 in first-half stoppage time.
With Leeds three goals ahead at the interval, Newcastle faced an enormous task simply to get back into the contest.
Okafor Makes It Four
Leeds showed no signs of easing off after the restart.
Noah Okafor struck in the 59th minute, adding a fourth and effectively putting the result beyond doubt.
The goal capped another dangerous attacking sequence from the hosts and left Newcastle with a mountain to climb.
Newcastle eventually found a response through substitute Bazoumana Touré, who scored in the 90th minute.
It proved nothing more than a consolation as Leeds comfortably saw out the remaining minutes.
Leeds Rise to Third
The victory keeps Leeds unbeaten after four Premier League matches, with two wins and two draws giving them eight points.
They now sit third in the table, behind only Arsenal and Manchester City, while Newcastle remain on five points after one win, two draws and their first defeat of the campaign.
For Farke, the result represents another significant statement from a Leeds side that is beginning to look increasingly confident at the top level.
Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle, meanwhile, suffered his first defeat since taking charge.
