Leeds United have seen their opening approach for Mykhailo Mudryk rejected by Chelsea, with negotiations over a potential loan move still continuing.

The development adds another twist to Mudryk's uncertain Chelsea future after the Ukrainian winger recently returned to competitive football following the resolution of his anti-doping case.

Chelsea have rejected Leeds' first offer for Mudryk, according to the latest reports.

The proposal was for a season-long loan, rather than a permanent transfer. Chelsea and the player had reportedly viewed a Premier League loan as a preferred option following his lengthy absence from football.

That means the rejection does not necessarily close the door on a move.

Instead, Leeds could now have to improve their proposal if they want to take Mudryk to Elland Road.

Mudryk's situation is particularly intriguing because he has only recently returned to the Chelsea squad.

The 25-year-old had been unable to play since late 2024 before his anti-doping proceedings were resolved. Chelsea subsequently confirmed that he was free to return to football.

He then made his return during pre-season, with manager Xabi Alonso describing the moment as emotional for both Mudryk and the club.

Chelsea therefore face a decision over whether to keep him around the first-team squad or allow him to rebuild his rhythm elsewhere.

Leeds could offer Mudryk the reset he needs

A move to Leeds would give Mudryk an opportunity to play regular Premier League football rather than remain on the fringes at Stamford Bridge.

That could be particularly valuable after such a prolonged period away from competitive football.

Chelsea, however, will need to decide whether a loan is the best solution for a player they signed from Shakhtar Donetsk for a reported £88 million in January 2023.

The club will also want to protect the value of a player who still has years remaining on his contract.

The door is not closed yet

For now, the important distinction is that Leeds' first bid has been rejected, not that negotiations have ended.

Chelsea have previously been open to the possibility of Mudryk leaving temporarily, and reports indicate that discussions between the two Premier League clubs are continuing.

The next proposal could therefore determine whether Leeds can turn their interest into an agreement.

Mudryk's Chelsea future remains unresolved — and Leeds have already discovered that getting him to Elland Road will not be straightforward.
