Manchester City Premier League Titles Will Not Simply Be Handed to Liverpool or Man Utd

Manchester City's reported guilty verdict in the Premier League's financial case has sparked a fresh debate over what could happen to the club's historic titles — but one major assumption is already causing confusion.

If Manchester City are eventually stripped of Premier League championships, Liverpool and Manchester United would not automatically receive those trophies.

City were reportedly found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges brought against them by the Premier League, covering alleged financial-rule breaches between 2009 and 2018.

However, no sporting sanction has yet been announced.

That distinction is crucial.

The Three Titles at the Centre of the Debate

Manchester City won three Premier League titles during the period covered by the case.

They claimed the championship in 2011/12, 2013/14 and 2017/18.

Manchester United finished second in 2011/12 and 2017/18, while Liverpool were runners-up in 2013/14.

That has naturally led to speculation that the three clubs could retrospectively inherit City's championships.

But finishing second does not automatically mean becoming champion years later.

The Premier League's disciplinary process would first have to determine the appropriate punishment, and there is currently no confirmed ruling stating that any of City's titles will be transferred to another club.

Why Liverpool and Man Utd Cannot Simply Collect the Trophies

The situation is more complicated than changing one name at the top of an old league table.

A retrospective sporting punishment could potentially affect points, league positions and other consequences, but that does not automatically create a mechanism for handing the physical Premier League trophies to the original runners-up.

There could also be wider consequences involving European qualification, prize money, player bonuses and commercial agreements.

That is one reason the idea of simply giving Liverpool or Manchester United the titles is far from straightforward.

The history behind the debate makes the situation even more complicated.

In 2011/12, City and United both finished on 89 points, with City winning the title on goal difference after Sergio Agüero's famous stoppage-time goal against QPR.

In 2013/14, Liverpool finished two points behind City's champions.

Then in 2017/18, United finished 19 points behind Guardiola's record-breaking City side.

So while the runners-up are obvious when looking at the final tables, changing the official outcome decades later would raise questions far beyond simply moving one club from second to first.

City Have Not Been Stripped of Anything Yet

This is the most important part of the story.

The reported guilty verdict does not itself mean Manchester City's previous titles have been removed.

No final sporting punishment has been announced, and City are expected to appeal the findings.

Until the disciplinary process is completed, the historical Premier League records remain unchanged.

That means Manchester City remain officially recognised as the champions of the 2011/12, 2013/14 and 2017/18 seasons.

The Big Question Is Still the Punishment

The next major development is therefore not whether Liverpool or Manchester United will receive medals.

It is what punishment, if any, the independent process ultimately imposes on Manchester City.

Possible sanctions under the Premier League's disciplinary framework can include points deductions, financial penalties and other sporting measures.

Whether any punishment would be applied retrospectively — and whether it would alter historical league standings — remains unresolved.

For now, the internet debate has moved faster than the actual disciplinary process.

Manchester City's titles have not been handed to Liverpool or Manchester United.

And there is currently no official decision saying that they will be.

Fan Debate

⚽ Goal: City’s titles remain officially unchanged for now.

🔥 Fire: The possibility of retrospective changes has created a huge debate.

😲 Shock: Liverpool and Man Utd would not automatically inherit the trophies even if City were punished.

Well I don’t think it would be proper to strip them off their league titles because it’s been years and the history that has been made along side the fans and the fact that everyone has moved on from that i think it’s really gonna be complicated But to be honest they should face disciplinary actions such as point deductions and fines 🥲
