Gilberto Mora has done it again.
The 17-year-old Mexico sensation has added another extraordinary record to his rapidly growing collection, becoming the youngest goalscorer in the history of the Mexican national team after rescuing a 1-1 draw against Colombia in Baltimore.
Mora scored his first senior international goal in the second half of Rafael Márquez's first match as Mexico head coach, producing a moment of individual brilliance to cancel out Luis Javier Suárez's opener.
But the goal meant much more than simply earning Mexico a draw.
It erased a record that had stood for 96 years.
Mora Finally Gets His First Mexico Goal
Mexico fell behind after Colombia struck in the ninth minute, leaving the new-look Tricolor chasing the game.
The response came after half-time.
Mora received the ball inside the Colombian penalty area, used a sharp change of direction to evade Jhon Lucumí and then fired a right-footed finish beyond the goalkeeper.
It was the kind of individual moment that has become increasingly familiar from the teenage midfielder.
This time, however, it carried historic significance.
At 17 years, 11 months and 12 days, Mora became the youngest player ever to score for Mexico's senior men's team.
A 96-Year-Old Record Finally Falls
Before Mora, the record belonged to Manuel Rosas.
Rosas scored for Mexico against Argentina at the 1930 World Cup when he was 18 years, three months and two days old.
For almost a century, nobody had managed to beat that mark.
Mora has now done it by more than three months.
The achievement is particularly remarkable because the Tijuana midfielder is still only 17, yet he has already established himself as part of Mexico's senior setup and represented the country at a World Cup.
The Latest Addition to an Extraordinary Record List
Mora's latest milestone is not an isolated achievement.
His rise through Mexican football has been defined by records of precocity.
He became the youngest player to make an official senior debut for Mexico, doing so at 16 during the 2025 Gold Cup.
He was also part of the Mexico squad that won the 2025 Gold Cup, making him the youngest player to win a senior international title according to FIFA.
Then came the 2026 World Cup.
Mora became the youngest Mexican player ever to appear at a World Cup, making his debut against South Africa at 17 years and 240 days.
FIFA records that he was also the sixth-youngest player ever to appear at the tournament.
Now there is another record beside his name: Mexico's youngest senior international goalscorer.
There was another interesting detail surrounding Mora's latest milestone.
The teenager was wearing Mexico's iconic No. 10 shirt for the first time against Colombia.
It turned into a memorable debut for the shirt.
Mora's goal was also the first of the new Rafael Márquez era, giving the 17-year-old an important place in the beginning of Mexico's new cycle towards the 2030 World Cup.
Márquez subsequently replaced Mora, with the youngster receiving a standing ovation from the crowd in Baltimore.
The Records Are Starting to Become the Story
There is an obvious temptation to focus on Mora's age every time he produces another outstanding moment.
But his performances are increasingly making the records feel like a consequence rather than the entire story.
His ability to receive the ball under pressure, carry possession, beat defenders and make decisions in attacking areas has already earned him opportunities at the highest level.
FIFA previously highlighted his tactical intelligence, creativity, close control and ability to operate in several attacking positions.
Against Colombia, those qualities produced the goal that put his name into Mexican football history once again.
At 17, Mora has already collected a remarkable list of milestones.
And judging by how quickly the previous records are falling, this may not be the last chapter.
