Ben Shelton produced one of the biggest victories of his career by defeating defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in a dramatic five-set US Open quarter-final.
The American eighth seed won 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(7) after four hours and 28 minutes of extraordinary tennis. The match finally ended at 3:33 a.m., making it the latest finish in US Open history.
Shelton showed remarkable composure after Alcaraz fought back from two sets down. The American eventually sealed victory in the deciding-set tiebreak, producing a huge 146-mph ace on match point.
The victory sends Shelton into his third Grand Slam semi-final and ends Alcaraz's title defence.
Shelton will now face fellow American Frances Tiafoe in a historic semi-final.
