Carlos Alcaraz survived an early scare at the 2026 US Open before producing the kind of response that has made him one of tennis’s most dangerous competitors.
The defending champion recovered from losing the opening set to Portugal’s Jaime Faria, winning the next three sets to secure a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, 6-2 victory at Arthur Ashe Stadium and move into the third round.
The result was particularly significant because this is only Alcaraz’s second competitive match since returning from a lengthy absence caused by a right wrist injury. Rather than allowing a difficult opening set to derail his title defence, the second seed gradually took control and finished with a commanding victory.
A Rocky Start for the Defending Champion
Faria entered the match with little interest in simply admiring the defending champion from the other side of the net.
The Portuguese player used a powerful serve and aggressive tennis to unsettle Alcaraz, breaking the Spaniard midway through the opening set and protecting his own service games well enough to take the first 6-4.
For Alcaraz, the problem was not necessarily a lack of quality. He admitted afterwards that he was playing too quickly and needed to settle down.
That adjustment proved decisive.
Instead of chasing the match, Alcaraz began constructing points more patiently, giving himself greater opportunities to use his variety and explosive shot-making.

Alcaraz Turns the Match Around
Once Alcaraz found his rhythm, Faria suddenly had very little room to breathe.
The Spaniard won eight consecutive games, racing through the second set 6-0 before carrying his momentum into the third.
His ability to change the momentum of a match remains one of his defining strengths.
A particularly spectacular drop-shot-and-lob combination delighted the Arthur Ashe crowd as Alcaraz began mixing power with touch. He continued applying pressure from the baseline while also moving forward effectively when opportunities appeared.

The most encouraging aspect for Alcaraz may not have been the scoreline.
It was the way his body responded.
After nearly five months away from competitive tennis because of his wrist problem, Alcaraz has entered the US Open with the obvious objective of defending his title, but his physical condition remains an important part of the story.
He acknowledged that he initially wanted the match to be shorter, but ultimately viewed the four-set battle as useful preparation because it allowed him to test himself physically.
That is an important development for a player attempting to build momentum after such a long layoff.
There is still plenty of tournament ahead, but Alcaraz has now completed two matches without suffering an obvious physical setback.
A Different Challenge Under the Lights
The night-session environment also presented Alcaraz with a different challenge.
He explained that conditions during the evening at the US Open can feel very different from daytime matches, while the atmosphere inside Arthur Ashe Stadium becomes considerably more intense.
Rather than allowing that environment to overwhelm him, Alcaraz eventually used it as fuel.
The crowd responded to his comeback, and the defending champion appeared increasingly comfortable as the match progressed.
That ability to adapt could become increasingly important as the tournament reaches the later rounds.
What Comes Next?
Alcaraz now advances to the third round, where he will face China’s Wu Yibing.
The match will provide another opportunity to assess how quickly Alcaraz is returning to his best level after his wrist injury.
His opening two matches have already offered two different tests: a straightforward first-round victory over Roman Safiullin followed by a more demanding comeback against Faria.
For a player who has not competed regularly for months, that progression could prove valuable.
