Middlesbrough have completed the permanent signing of Tottenham youngster Ashley Phillips, with the England Under-21 defender putting pen to paper on a five-year contract at the Riverside.

The move makes Phillips the eighth signing of Middlesbrough's busy summer window, as Kim Hellberg's side continue to strengthen their squad with Premier League promotion firmly in their sights.
Phillips joined Tottenham from Blackburn Rovers in 2023 but never made a competitive first-team appearance for Spurs.
Instead, the 21-year-old built valuable experience through loan spells, including at Plymouth Argyle and Stoke City.
He became particularly familiar with Championship football during his two spells at Stoke, making the majority of his senior appearances for the Potters. [Goal]
That experience has now convinced Middlesbrough to make the defender a permanent part of their promotion project.
Middlesbrough have reportedly agreed an initial £7 million fee with Tottenham, with a further £13m in potential add-ons taking the overall package as high as £20m. Spurs are also understood to have retained a 20 per cent sell-on clause and matching rights on any future transfer.

For Tottenham, it represents a significant return on a player they signed from Blackburn for around £2m.
For Boro, it is another substantial investment in a young player they believe can grow into a key figure.
The defender has made it clear that he sees Middlesbrough as the right place for the next stage of his development.
Phillips said he had gained valuable experience at Blackburn and Tottenham before developing further during his loan spells, but believes there is still much more to come from him.

The club narrowly missed out on promotion last season after losing the Championship play-off final to Hull City.
Their summer recruitment has therefore been aggressive, with Phillips becoming another major addition to a squad built to challenge near the top of the division.
Phillips will also reunite with a familiar Tottenham face at Middlesbrough.
Will Lankshear, another Spurs youngster, has already made a permanent move to the Riverside this summer, meaning Boro have now brought two Tottenham players into their squad.
For Phillips, the immediate challenge is to establish himself as a regular and help Middlesbrough turn their promotion ambitions into reality.
