Barcelona Fined €602 Over Julián Álvarez Approach After Atlético Complaint

Barcelona have been fined €602 by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) following Atlético Madrid’s complaint over the Catalan club’s approach for Julián Álvarez.

The penalty brings an official end to a transfer dispute that intensified during the summer, when Atlético accused Barcelona of making contact with Álvarez despite the Argentine forward still being under contract with the Madrid club.

The amount of the fine is relatively small, but the RFEF ruling confirms that Barcelona were sanctioned under the federation’s regulations governing contact with players who remain contracted to another club.

Why Atlético Madrid Reported Barcelona

Atlético’s complaint centred on the procedure Barcelona allegedly followed while exploring the possibility of signing Álvarez.

Under the RFEF’s competition regulations, a club seeking to sign a professional footballer who is still under contract must notify the player's current club in writing before beginning negotiations with the player.

Atlético argued that Barcelona had approached Álvarez without first completing that step.

The Madrid club filed complaints with both the RFEF and FIFA. The Spanish federation subsequently opened extraordinary disciplinary proceedings, while FIFA determined that it did not have jurisdiction over the matter.

The RFEF has now closed the case with Barcelona receiving a €602 fine under Article 133, which covers failure to comply with regulatory obligations. The offence was classified as a minor infringement.

Barcelona Escape a Bigger Sporting Punishment

While Atlético succeeded in obtaining a disciplinary ruling, Barcelona have avoided the more serious sporting consequences that could have accompanied a higher-level offence.

Article 133 allows for penalties beyond a financial fine in certain circumstances, including suspension or stadium closure. In Barcelona's case, however, the federation imposed the maximum financial penalty applicable under that provision.

That makes the punishment largely symbolic from a sporting perspective.

For Barcelona, the bigger significance is that the RFEF has formally concluded a case that had threatened to add another layer of tension to their relationship with Atlético.

Another Chapter in the Barcelona-Atlético Transfer Rivalry

The Álvarez case also has a familiar feel.

Atlético previously complained to the RFEF over Barcelona's pursuit of Antoine Griezmann in 2019. That dispute resulted in Barcelona being fined €300, creating a precedent between the two clubs over the approach of players who remained under contract.

The latest case involved a much bigger potential transfer.

Álvarez's future became a major talking point during the summer after the Argentina international publicly discussed the possibility of leaving Atlético. Barcelona were interested in bringing the striker to Camp Nou, but a transfer ultimately did not materialise.

The episode nevertheless created significant tension between Álvarez and Atlético supporters.

Álvarez Has Since Tried to Repair the Relationship

While Barcelona deal with the RFEF punishment, Álvarez has also been attempting to move beyond the controversy.

After scoring Atlético's winner against Deportivo La Coruña on Saturday, the forward apologised to supporters for comments that had fuelled speculation about his future.

Álvarez acknowledged that Atlético fans had reason to be unhappy with what he said and recognised the support they had given him since his arrival.

His goal also provided a positive moment in his relationship with the Atlético faithful, with sections of the Metropolitano crowd giving him a standing ovation.

The Transfer Never Happened — But the Dispute Is Now Officially Over

Barcelona ultimately did not sign Álvarez, but the pursuit left behind a disciplinary case that lasted well beyond the transfer window.

The RFEF's decision now closes that chapter with a €602 penalty.

For Atlético, the ruling provides formal recognition that Barcelona breached the relevant regulatory obligation, while for Barça the financial impact is minimal compared with the attention surrounding the dispute.

The bigger question now is whether the relationship between the two Spanish clubs can move forward without another transfer battle dominating the conversation.
