Bayern Munich have reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Benfica for João Palhinha, bringing the Portuguese midfielder's disappointing spell in Germany close to an end.

Despite the original wording of the transfer story, the move is from Bayern Munich to Benfica, rather than Benfica to Bayern. Reports on August 20 indicate that the clubs have agreed a deal worth an initial €14 million plus up to €5 million in bonuses, potentially taking the total package to €19 million.

Palhinha Set for Benfica Return

The 31-year-old midfielder is reportedly set to return to Portugal after two years with Bayern.

Palhinha joined Bayern from Fulham in 2024 for a significant fee, arriving with a reputation as one of Europe's strongest defensive midfielders.

However, he struggled to establish himself as a regular starter in Munich and spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur.

Bayern Ready to Move On

Bayern had already made it clear that Palhinha was available for transfer this summer.

Sporting director Max Eberl previously confirmed that the club wanted to find a permanent solution after an attempted move to Aston Villa failed to materialise. Bayern were unwilling to accept Villa's proposed loan structure.

Benfica subsequently emerged as a serious alternative.

The Portuguese club reportedly agreed personal terms with Palhinha on a four-year contract running until 2030, before negotiations with Bayern progressed.

A Difficult Bayern Spell

Palhinha's time at Bayern never developed as expected.

The Portugal international had established himself as an elite ball-winning midfielder during his time in the Premier League, but competition for places at Bayern limited his opportunities.

The arrival of a player with his defensive qualities appeared to give Bayern another option in midfield, yet he struggled to become a consistent part of the starting XI.

His loan move to Tottenham last season provided another opportunity to revive his career, but Bayern ultimately decided to pursue a permanent exit.

Benfica Offer a Fresh Start

A return to Benfica represents an opportunity for Palhinha to rebuild his career in familiar surroundings.

The midfielder previously played for Benfica between 2018 and 2022, although he spent portions of that period away from the club on loan.

He subsequently moved to Sporting CP before joining Fulham and establishing himself in the Premier League.

Now, Benfica could provide the experienced midfielder with another opportunity to become an important player.

The Financial Details

The reported agreement would see Bayern receive €14 million upfront, with another €5 million available in bonuses.

That would allow the German champions to potentially collect €19 million from the sale.

Palhinha is also reportedly set to earn around €2.5 million net per year at Benfica, alongside a signing bonus.

Sevens Sports Arena Verdict

João Palhinha's Bayern Munich chapter appears to be coming to an end.

The Portuguese midfielder arrived in Germany with a big reputation but never managed to establish himself as a key figure in Vincent Kompany's plans.

Benfica now offer him a chance to return to Portugal and play an important role once again.

For Bayern, the deal represents an opportunity to remove a player who no longer appeared central to their plans while bringing in a potential €19 million transfer package.

After a disappointing spell in Munich, Palhinha now has the chance to restart his career at Benfica.
