Palace send City a clear message

It is about as clear a message as Manchester City could have received.

Why City want Wharton

City's interest comes as they reshape their midfield under Enzo Maresca.

Rodri has departed for Barcelona, while Reijnders has also left, creating a significant hole in the centre of the pitch. City are expected to remain active in the market and have identified several possible solutions.

Wharton fits the profile of a midfielder capable of developing into a long-term Premier League star.

His performances have already earned him four England caps, while his rise at Palace has established him as one of the club's most valuable young players.

But Palace have little reason to rush into a sale.

The timing makes a deal even harder

One of the biggest problems for City is the stage of the transfer window.

The Premier League deadline is approaching, and Palace would have very little time to find a suitable replacement if they suddenly agreed to sell their midfielder.

That explains why the club's response has been so firm.
