NWSL Power Rankings: Orlando Pride Shock Spirit, Gotham Stay Top as Ashley Sanchez Takes Golden Boot Lead

The NWSL delivered another weekend of surprises, with the Orlando Pride stunning the Washington Spirit, Gotham FC remaining at the summit and Ashley Sanchez moving to the top of the Golden Boot race.

Matchweek 18 once again demonstrated how quickly the picture can change in the NWSL. Orlando ended a three-match losing streak by beating the Spirit 1–0 away from home, while Gotham were held to a goalless draw by Angel City but retained first place.

Orlando Pride produce a major upset

Orlando entered their meeting with Washington in desperate need of a response after a difficult run of results.

They got exactly that.

Haley McCutcheon scored in the third minute, finishing after receiving a pass from Barbra Banda, and the Pride then spent most of the match protecting their advantage.

Washington controlled the majority of possession and pushed for an equaliser, but Orlando's defence refused to break.

The Pride had less than 30 per cent of possession yet held on for a hugely valuable 1–0 victory.

The result was particularly significant because Washington had been sitting near the top of the NWSL standings.

Gotham wobble but remain No. 1

Gotham FC remain the team to beat.

The league leaders were unable to find a breakthrough against Angel City, settling for a 0–0 draw, but the result was still enough to keep them at the top.

Gotham entered the weekend with 44 points and remain seven points clear of Washington after the latest round of matches.

However, there was concern beyond the result.

Rose Lavelle suffered a head injury during the match, creating uncertainty over her availability for Gotham's upcoming fixtures.

Gotham's position at the top remains strong, but the gap behind them means there is little room for complacency.

Ashley Sanchez takes centre stage

While the battle at the top of the table continues, Ashley Sanchez is now leading the Golden Boot race.

The North Carolina Courage forward scored twice against Boston Legacy in a 2–1 victory, taking her season tally to 13 goals and moving ahead of Orlando's Barbra Banda.

Sanchez's second goal came from the penalty spot in the 107th minute, making it the latest regular-season goal in NWSL history.

Her form has been one of the biggest individual stories of the 2026 campaign.

The Courage are also climbing the standings, having now won four of their last five matches.

North Carolina continue their rise

The Courage's recent run has transformed their season.

They followed their dramatic 4–3 victory over Washington with another win against Boston, giving them four victories in five matches.

Sanchez has been central to that surge, while North Carolina's attacking output has made them increasingly difficult to overlook in the playoff race.

They may not be among the league's top two yet, but their momentum is undeniable.

Washington suffer another setback

The Spirit's defeat to Orlando represents another disappointing result after their strong start to the campaign.

They remain among the leading sides, but the gap to Gotham has grown, while teams below them are beginning to apply pressure.

Orlando's disciplined defensive performance also highlighted a problem Washington will need to solve: finding ways to break down opponents when they are unable to create clear chances.

The NWSL picture is changing

With the regular season moving deeper into its decisive stage, the competition at both ends of the table is becoming increasingly intense.

Gotham remain in control at the top, but Washington and Portland are still within striking distance.

Meanwhile, North Carolina's surge and Sanchez's Golden Boot charge have added another storyline to an already competitive season.

For Orlando, beating Washington could be the result that reignites their campaign.

For Gotham, the challenge is maintaining their advantage.

And for Sanchez, the target is now clear.

The Golden Boot belongs to her — for now.
