AJ Lee has addressed her WWE future following her WrestleMania 42 defeat to Becky Lynch, suggesting that her latest chapter with the company may not necessarily be her last.
Lee returned to WWE in September 2025 after a decade away from the ring and quickly became one of the biggest stories in women's wrestling. Her comeback eventually led to a championship victory at Elimination Chamber 2026, where she defeated Lynch for the Women's Intercontinental Championship.
However, her reign ended at WrestleMania 42 when Lynch defeated her for the title on Night 1 in Las Vegas.
AJ Lee Leaves the Door Open
Following WrestleMania, Lee made it clear that she was not treating the moment as a definitive farewell.
Her message to fans suggested that while she did not know exactly when she would return, she hoped they would see her again.
That uncertainty became particularly interesting as WWE's creative plans for Lee appeared to change after WrestleMania. Reports in April suggested that she was not part of the company's immediate creative direction.
More recent reporting, however, has provided a more positive outlook.
Fightful reported in August that sources within WWE believed AJ Lee had not wrestled her final match, although there was no confirmation of a specific return date or storyline.
A Return Could Happen
Lee's latest comments have therefore created an intriguing situation.
Rather than announcing retirement, the former champion appears to be leaving the possibility of another WWE appearance open.
That gives WWE plenty of options. A carefully planned storyline could bring Lee back for another major programme, while her experience and popularity would also make her valuable in helping elevate younger talent.
Her WrestleMania 42 run already proved that fans remain invested in seeing her compete.

The most important point is that there is currently no confirmed return date. At the same time, reports indicating that WWE insiders do not believe she has wrestled her final match suggest the door remains open.

And judging by the reaction to her comeback, WWE knows exactly how quickly that door could become one of the biggest stories in wrestling again.
